EDUCATING,
COUNSELING AND
HEALING WITH NATURE
"Forming
a community online and understanding our belonging within and contribution to that
community is one of the huge transformation aspects of this program. If we were not part of
this journey together I would have sat and read about and done all of these
activities on my own and then wrote in my journal about my experiences. But,
it's obvious that neither you or I would not have gained half as much
validation, insight,
confirmation, and better understanding of ourselves, each other and how
nature really works. Being inspired by each one of your
posts
and the reactions and comments that you gave me made the sense of
belonging within a larger community a critical part of this learning
process."
- Anonymous Project NatureConnect Participant
SYNOPSIS:
Starting with our online Orientation Course, this Applied Ecopsychology, holistic degree and multiple sensory growth program
includes each student's life experience and prior training.
The training consists of learning
and teaching lessons about nature-connected, independent group thinking
and language skills that produce out-of-the-box innovation and master
problem solving.
Students
come from many religions and philosophies or from no religious
background. However, by energizing into consciousness our excessively
subdued 53 natural senses and sensibilities, the program supports and
strengthens connections between nature and spirit.
Unlike
most traditional education efforts, each participant learns to become,
and then becomes an intern, resident, guide or mentor that helps others
exchange messages and observations obtained by creating moments
that let Earth teach. Ours is an online accredited
expedition process that increases critical thinking wisdom by obtaining
sensory information about how nature's powers work, in and around us.
Person to person explorations and discoveries of the opportunities available in this program are the best way to learn about it. To this end, browse through this website (for credit) and then phone us to see how we can best serve your special interests.
Learn what you really want to know in less than ten minutes. Call Mike 360-378-6313 or email us a note with your phone number and we'll call you.
The shared course work heightens natural individual
and community contact to afford accreditation and connection with
authentic nature and its powers. The process includes credit or waivers for equivalent training. This
strengthens credibility for knowing how to increase personal, social and environmental well being.
The program's hands-on whole earth and whole life activities provide
unadulterated contact with the dance of nature's grace, balance and
restorative powers, in and around us, backyard or back country. Its
professional and personal remedies address destructive emotional bonds
and attachments. It helps us benefit from attaining Applied
Ecopsychology degrees or nature-connected Organic Psychology
certification that can be added to any livelihood or relationship.
All programs start with the 2 credit Orientation
Course (ECO 500).

DEGREE
AND COURSE PROCESS: OUR ONLINE, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
EXPEDITION
A SELF-REGULATING INFORMATION SHARING PROCESS
Throughout
its history since 1945, "Project
NatureConnect" programs have self-directed and regulated themselves via
community meetings that include nature's intelligence and the best sensory thinking of leaders and
participants. Together, the participants have shared their thoughts and
feelings to make sensible decisions about the most wise and rewarding
way to make their day, program or life happen.
The
attractive interpersonal exchange of information on the program is the
same, cooperative,
self-organizing process by which nature works without using
words. Throughout the eons, moment by
moment, non-verbally, nature's attraction essence has, attraction by attraction, grown and
sustained its self-correcting and balanced ways.
Nature can be seen as a experimental space and time expedition dance of its own through the eons.
As part of nature, we
inherit this ability and our course work helps us become conscious of it and apply it.
On our courses, in natural areas backyard or backcountry, people of all
ages share their natural attraction thoughts and feelings. This gives their natural senses the
time and place to safely express themselves, to listen and be heard in
conjunction with authentic nature. This is the core expedition of the online degree, course
and certificate programs of Project NatureConnect at the Institute of
Global Education and the Akamai University Applied Ecopsychology
Institute.
"One
of the best parts about this program and its insights is to naturally
bring about an internal shift to live in a community way where
others have the space to transform and have a similar
shift. Spreading the gift of wholeness is a life long
pursuit of being in the present moment so as to create a deepening
connection to life that is happening now for others to share."
All programs start with the 2 credit Orientation
Course (ECO 500).

REDUCE TIME, ENERGY AND CONFUSION:
Most
people learn more powerfully through one-on-one questioning, mentoring
and exploration of topics than by reading instructions alone, no matter
how precise the instructions are. It is often a mistake to
believe that the totality of this custom-oriented program and its
administration can be mastered without the occasional use of a telephone to
obtain or confirm information
No
need to be shy. We are dedicated to support and enable
individuals who want to help increase personal, social and
environmental well-being. We invite and welcome you to learn what
you want to know about this program in less
than ten minutes...and even more than ten if you so choose. After
you have explored this website, call Mike 360-378-6313 or email us a note with your phone number and we'll call you in the USA.
DEVELOPMENT AND HISTORY THAT SHAPES OUR PROGRAM TODAY
In
1968, Dr. Michael J. Cohen's astonishing environmental education program became
a year long, accredited outdoor expedition traveling classroom, the
Trailside Country School. This
occurred because Cohen translated and published as courses the
knowledge in the school community that was
gained from its history. It established a new, self-designed and implemented nature-connected curriculum in natural areas across the U.S.A.
As described below, the sensory process it developed enabled its students to co-create ideal
living and learning relationships in conjunction with natural areas.
Cohen's
translation of the program
became descriptions and syllabi of courses in Biology, Natural History,
Psychology, Group Dynamics, Anthropology, English etc.
Because
of its phenomenal results, the school was recognized as being a wisely
integrated form of education in balance and it was invited to
become
the National Audubon Society Expedition Institute in 1978. Its courses
were
published in catalogs and, in time, regionally accredited by the
University of the
State of New York and Lesley University Graduate School. They were
accepted in over 1500 college and university degree
programs.
At the time of the school's inception (1968), Ecopsychology
had not been
"invented." Degrees were in Environmental Education and
Psychology. Cohen's course that came closest to applying
Ecopsychology was entitled "An Objective Search for Mother Earth."
The programs were based on learning
how to genuinely connect with nature as community, to be able to
register and consciously think and feel with the renewing dance of nature and our
living Earth, in and around us.
...."Through
natural attraction sensations and feelings that were energized into
consciousness through sensory contacts in natural areas, young or old,
students and staff alike learned to respect the web-of-life community
and themselves as part of it. Nature taught them to enjoy, validate and incorporate
the self-correcting wisdom of the web in their thinking and feeling. Earth was viewed to act like, or be, a living organism.
The
National Audubon Society identified the Trailside Country School program as the most
revolutionary form of education in America and selected it to be an Audubon
program out of 116 programs that were considered for
sponsorship. In the Trailside/Audubon programs:
- ....Chemical dependencies,
including alcohol and tobacco, disappeared as did destructive social
relationships.
- ....Personality and eating
disorders subsided; violence, crime and prejudice were unknown.
- ....Academics improved because
they were applicable, hands-on and fun.
- ....Loneliness,
hostility and depression subsided. Group interactions encouraged stress
release and management; each day was fulfilling and relatively peaceful.
- ....Participants
using meditation found they could enhance it, or not need it, as they
helped build their nature-connected community.
- ....Participants
knew each other better than they knew their families or best friends.
They felt safe and developed the resilience to express and act from
their deeper thoughts and feelings. A profound sense of social and
environmental responsibility guided their decisions.
- ....When
vacation periods arrived, neither staff nor student wanted to go home.
Each person had enjoyably worked to build this supportive, balanced
living and learning group. They were home."
Something important to think about:
Personally,
socially and environmentally, many destructive aspects of Industrial
Society continue, unabated, to place life on earth at risk and stress us. It is not
due to a lack of information that this is taking place. It is more like
an addiction to the mind- polluting process that conditions us to
think, feel and build irresponsible relationships, even when we don't
want to.
It is
critical that we identify and support individuals who appreciate or
love nature and whose consciousness recognizes the value of bringing
nature's unadulterated purity, balance and renewing powers into our
nature-estranged mentality. For this reason, Project
NatureConnect and its cooperating programs subsidize the costs of their
Applied Ecopsychology training program and provide financial assistance
that makes it affordable for any qualified candidate to benefit from,
learn and teach the art and science of educating, counseling and
healing with nature.
Are the experts, below and elsewhere,
incorrect in their observations of this program and its values? Or,
instead, do we
suffer because Industrial Society has destructively strayed from the
tools offered by the study of sensory ecotherapy, tools that help us live in peaceful balance with nature, in and around us?
"The
activities work, they move students. I see significant improvement in
their self-esteem and value. They find something outside themselves
that is actually a truth within themselves."
- Mark Walsh Director of Wilderness Therapy, Hyde Psychiatric Hospital
"Contains
a strong sense of commitment to bed rock values and to the human
spirit...a willingness to live out beliefs, to experience life...a
system of thinking that can be very very useful for many people who
have never given much thought to their place in the cosmic order... a
way to feel connected to the universe and strengthen a sense of
personal identity."
- Maria West, M.S.W., Counselor
"How
important Project NatureConnect's guidebooks, workshops and activities
have been to us. Its straightforward, unembroidered perceptions are as
refreshing and clear as a mountain lake. It's a joy, for it unifies
rather than polarizes. It effectively speaks to modern problems with
modern knowledge, skills and language."
- Nancy McMinnon The Gowland Foundation, Victoria, British Columbia.
"It's great. He's s right to make the responsibility for living on good terms with Gaia a personal one."
- Dr. James Lovelock, Author, Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth
"Mike
Cohen has instilled in his students an awareness of nature and its
workings that few will come close to in years of concentration."
- Jim Hart, Naturalist, U.S. National Park Service
"Its
impact lies in the fact that the author has lived its wisdom of these
past twenty years... I have learned first had that its theories prove
themselves in the fruition that its education delivers. It offer the
medicine that disillusioned humanity and the endangered environment
needs."
- Herb AlF, Ed.D. President, Environment Talent Inquiry and Development
APPLICATION
Today, the expedition cooperative community learning process, described above, is
translated into the Project
NatureConnect distant learning training, course and degree program. It
is a living system consisting of all its participants in contact with
nature. They are also guides, mentors and faculty, a system
sustained, in part, by Internet communication.
The courses and the
degree requirements
are published, recognized and approved as are any other university
graduate or undergraduate classroom courses and degrees.
However, the course work is learned and achieved, online, through the
unique natural attraction ecology shared learning process, described above.
Like climbing a mountain on an unexplored path, every member of the
program is roped into everyone else so individually and collectively,
we and the program succeed by dedicating ourselves to learn about life in balance from
contact with the mountain, not from stories about it by unbalanced folks who have
not taken our route to discover what the mountain is attracted to tell
us about itself, and ourselves as part of it. The secret to our
success is that the mountain is attracted to build a good relationship
with us because that is how the essence of nature works.
An individual needs
training but does not need certification or a degree, to learn the
ECHN process or to use and teach its sensory nature-connecting
individual activities.
The activities are as as much fun
and experiential as learning to play the game of "Hide and Seek." Their
added value is that we seek the hidden secrets of life in balance that
we biologically inherit as part of nature and whose intelligence is
still alive and well in authentic nature, backyard or backcountry.
Our form of the "Hide and Seek" reasonably reconnects and
interlaces humanity's natural
senses (that are continuums of nature, moment by moment,) with
their origins in nature and its eons in the natural environment. The
results speak for
themselves. Visit our survey of participant links and key web pages.
By using the Internet instead of meeting in person, the means of educating, counseling and healing with nature parallel the
self-organizing, cooperative group, hands-on, mentor process that made
Cohen's expedition education programs work so successfully. The
critical ingredient is to want to be participate in the dance of this
natural attraction process, to be there for it and support it in
whatever way you can contribute. Your reward is that nature's balance and purifying powers in people and places will do the same for you.
"I
appreciate this program from the bottom of my heart. It helps me bridge
the love of nature and life itself that has cradled me since birth with
my work as a therapist. And it provides a workable translation of
Indigenous healing that my elders taught, to my clients and students.
It is accessible and doable for everyone! I love the way the program
itself is an organism that is whole, alive, gentle and kind. Thanks for
being here, everyone."

swimming for yourself or others if you have never learned to swim and
experienced these values. Similarly, for this reason, inquirers are
strongly encouraged to gain additional program experience, structure
and customizing information by telephone. 360-378-6313.
COURSE LEARNING PROCESS
All
the faculty at IGE Project NatureConnect are
also faculty at Akamai University. In the online Akamai Applied
Ecopsychology
Institute program, students and faculty learn how to think like
nature's balanced perfection
works by doing and sharing nature-connection activities, backyard or
backcountry. The activities
enable them to create sensory moments that let their mind intermingle
with its origins in the purity of natural relationship building and let
nature's self-correcting secrets reveal themselves. It is each
individual's conscious sensory contact with nature's flow, in
themselves,
others and the natural environment, that does the teaching and healing.
Grades
are assigned to the published courses. However, the grades are earned
by students and faculty evaluating the degree of excellence and cooperation that a student
has displayed while working with the total expedition community course
participation, academics and administrative processes of the Institute.
The key to mastering our
nature-connecting courses or degrees by Internet and email is that each individual,
painstakingly makes sure to communicate and obtain consent for their
efforts from their classmates and from the total Institute
student, guide and
mentor community. Over the Internet and by telephone, their words share
what
their thoughts and feelings are experiencing, how they are acting, and
what they plan to do. These understandings are then
actualized,
or they are modified and further consented to by the online community
when plans or experiences change.
"I
have noticed since co-facilitating three courses and doing my own
course work, plus contact on the cooperative community groups, that PNC
creates a startlingly, overwhelmingly positive and happy group of
people! I don't think I have ever - in all my years as a
therapist, trainer, teacher of supposedly peace enhancing and happiness
producing endeavors - seen this much happiness, peace, delight,
kindness, good will and NNIAL
- especially NNIAL and in a very accessible form - dancing around the
pages and lives of this many people. Thanks!!!!"
- L.W.
DEGREE COMPLETION
Students
officially matriculate into the degree granting University program when
their course work is completed. This is accomplished through
a
recommendation and transcript by the faculty and students in the
Student Cooperative at the Institute. It is based on the
student's involvement with the total process of cooperatively operating
and administering the Institute as well as completion of their course
work. This learning-by-doing is experiential.
Many of the cooperative program commitments are parts of a
course on how to help other students make and
fulfill these commitments as part of the program's learn by experience
operation. A benefit of this learning by doing and being process is that it keeps
tuition fees about 85 percent lower than degrees obtained elsewhere.
Without
exception, students who have been recommended by the PNC program for
matriculation into the degree program have very successfully completed
their degrees.
"The
investment to my degree(s) is definitely an enormous benefit not only
in
the incalculable personal knowledge and growth it provided but
professionally as well. Now that I have an active psychotherapy
practice it has become an enormous professional advantage.
1. I am much better equipped to help my clients by using NSTP principles
and the primary underpinning for my work.
2. I am more confident and assured as a therapist so I enjoy my work now
immensely. I always look forward to seeing my clients. Clearly
these first two are directly related.
3. The world is infinitely more receptive to me as a PhD
applied ecopsychologist. Even though I am not a “licensed” psychologist, and never
claim to be, just the word and the three little letters open doors and
provide credibility that my Applied Ecopsychology ability alone can
never attain. This is
perhaps not at is should be per se, but it is certainly a marvelous
asset."

A PARTICIPANT'S DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE AND LEARNING PROCESS
"After
reading the homepage and links of interest there, I called Dr. Cohen and he soon returned it. By phone we designed a
program plan that met my special goal. To more
powerfully help people, I wanted to add Organic Psychology to my skills
as a registered nurse.
It was great to discover that my life
experience and training made me eligible to get an MS equivalence so I
could consider doing either an MS or a PhD program, or I could just
take courses and offer Organic Psychology to my clients by being
Certified in it.
Organic Psychology is one of several names that have,
over the past half century, been used to describe this program.
Others include Natural Systems Thinking Process, Natural
Attraction Ecology and Applied Ecopsychology.
I knew
the program was right for me as I read through and responded to the
survey of participants pages and the many links to them there, where the
participants describe their experiences on the courses and their application of them.
I
received equivalence ratings for several courses whose requirements I
had already completed at work and in other training programs.
It
felt right that this application of Ecopsychology program recognized that
the important things that I
learned elsewhere were worthwhile education that deserved credit. After
all, they were credible....In fact, I'm licensed in some of them.
Because
Organic Psychology acknowledges that natural systems and attractions in us are
trustable and honest in their own way, the program roots itself in
natural trust and honesty. It walked its talk, it subsidized me
financially because I recognized that nature, in and around us, needs
our help. We must learn how to tap into, as well as support, rather than injure, natural
systems as part of everything we do if we are to increase personal,
social and environmental well being.
I
enrolled because I
discovered that a friend of mine was meeting the goal of co-creating with nature while he was a Personal Life
Coach; he was trained in, and using this Project NatureConnect Applied Ecopsychology online program.
From
my visits to the
homepage and my phone calls, I was very sure this course would make
sense to to me because I looked into the details of its history and
results. I accomplished this by obtaining and read the trade published version of its e-book
Educating, Counseling and Healing with Nature.
I only paid $150
total for the online Orientation Course and that included the books for
it ($70), the Application Fee ($100), and eligibility for additional
financial assistance and participation through the program's "Learn
Now, Pay Later" plan. Financial assistance was based solely on trust
and a
contract I made to keep with a payment schedule I designed that fit my
needs. I've only payed what I could when I could. I was privileged to
do
this because people who encourage the program's goals subsidized
the remainder of my tuition and, although I've obtained my degree, I
still voluntarily contribute to helping pay for it. I like doing this because it makes
additional grant money available to other students and keeps the
program going, too. I also still participate in the optional work/study
program; I help facilitate the courses online and have run some for
outpatients at the hospital.
While on the Orientation
Course I joined the student cooperative. That put me on a mailing list
with all the rest of the 200 or more students and the faculty.
Then I just asked the co-op by email what questions I had or what
course(s) I was ready to take next and others joined me in taking them.
They provided answers to questions and let me know they would take a
course with me or help facilitate it. Via steps 1-15, I just took one course after
another and later used them to attain my degree.
After
I completed a
course, as part of the program I was given the opportunity to
co-facilitate another section of the course. This gave me the experience of
teaching courses on my own as part of the program.
Half the
reading on the courses was the email from other students on the
courses with me, about what they were discovering while doing the
nature-connecting activities. Our information came from direct sensory
contact with natural areas, backyard or backcountry, all over the
world, not from the bias of our nature-estranged society. We learned
from natural systems how to think and speak with and for them. Although
profound, this was simple and enjoyable because we were/are natural
systems. We were simply making contact with parts of ourselves and the
world that were missing in our nature-disconnected socialization. And
we were assured that we knew and could communicate this because we did
it, even by email! I used the experiences of my classmates in this
regard, as well as my own, to document some of the ideas I made in my
final project and its defense for my degree.
The essential thing
we learned was how to use simple nature-connecting sensory activities
to create moments that let Earth teach us what we wanted to know. How and why this amazing process works is described at http://www.ecopsych.com/transformation.html
Being
accepted to the Orientation Course or the Program is easy once you
decide that's what you want to do. Simply read the homepage, optionally
read or do the ECHN book then call the office, (360-378-6313) and get
your questions answered. They'll email you an easy-to-use copy of the
application. Complete it, keeping in mind that once you are on the
Orientation Course you can go as far as you want in the program and
honestly pay what you can afford when you can afford it.
I
am now working on facilitating a program
that will be part of Nurses Training here. This will enable people on
the hospital staff to add applied ecopsychology to their talents and vice versa. They will be able to obtain a degree in this
combination if they want one.
The
impact and need to learn and teach this Natural Attraction Ecology
process is tremendous. Any civilization worth the name should
pay
its citizens to master this program, just as any responsible business
has in-service training for its employees to achieve excellence in
meeting its goals."

"Human
behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The
rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious
traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When
these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and
societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are
threatened."
-Stephen
Aizenstat
In
industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to
betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking
over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we
normally share with natural systems and their eons of experience. Our
subconscious hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of
these senses underlies our greatest troubles.
