Elective courses that you take can become part of an appropriate ECO 700 course, or be taken as separate/distinct courses in lieu of a thesis.
A special Eco-Art Therapy (ECO 530/630) elective course is available for students interested in art.  (It may be used as an equivalence, in part, for an MS Thesis.)

Each course is a series of short essays or descriptions of various aspects of your prior and present life experience and training. Each essay blends your new-found knowledge of Organic Psychology ECHN with your past learning or experiences and describes the contribution it would have/will make.

The rationale for all these courses is included in this description of ECO 752:

ECO 752 Advanced Field Studies in Applied Ecopsychology (3 credits)
This course explores present or past field studies that make, or would have made, the way nature works become an ally to increase well-being if organic psychology had been included as part of them.

The application of Ecopsychology, as practiced in the discipline of "natural attraction ecology" and organic psychology, helps humanity address the crises that result from our estrangement from nature as nature's flow manifests itself as our our living planet, Earth.

Our nature-disconnected cultural environment envelopes us from birth.  This socializes and molds us into being good citizens of our excessively indoor and unbalanced way of life in Industrial Society. We are seldom educated to think and act as contributing citizens of global life community, of its plant, animal and mineral kingdoms and their self-organized ways to support the flow of nature's non-polluting perfection, in and around us. Rather, we learn to conquer or exploit nature's flow, often for profit.  This produces our most challenging problems, for nature is the essence that nurtures and restores life in purity, balance and well-being.

As part of nature, we are born with nature's renewing abilities. However, our thinking learns to bury them out of our sight and consciousness.  The purpose of this course is to explore field studies from our past and present life experiences and training and identify how the application of organic psychology and natural attraction ecology may release and strengthen nature's self-correcting powers in us so that they can help us address the heart of our troubles. In this way, students demonstrate that they have mastered, designed or implemented nature-connection techniques that will help us reverse many personal, social and environmental problems.  Students prepare a final compelling statement as either
1. an academic paper,
2. a project report
3. a portfolio and credit summary or
4. a combination of the above
as a minimum written assessment in this course.

ECO 751: Field Studies in Educating and Counseling With Nature (2 credits)
This course assigns credit for participation in the certification, GWSG learning community. It consists of passing a requirement for "Cooperative Administration of an NSTP Online Training and Degree Program." The student participates in Level 1, 2, or 3 of the Certification program and Professional Group online. The course requires students to implement their Co-op Admissions contract in the GWSG group as a continuation of the online webstring community learning process they have learned and applied in the Orientation Course ECO 500. It also consists of participating in the Public Education procedures and network whose rationale and materials are described on the Public Education page and its links

ECO 753:
Case Studies in Applied Ecopsychology (3 credits)
This course explores present or past case studies, which make, or would have made, the way nature works become an ally to increase well-being if organic psychology had been included as part of them.  The application of Ecopsychology, as practiced in the discipline of natural attraction ecology and organic psychology, helps humanity address the crises that result from our estrangement from nature as nature's flow manifests itself as our our living planet, Earth. Students prepare an academic paper or project report as a minimum written assessment in this course.

ECO 791 required: Special Projects in Applied Ecopsychology (3 credits)
This course explores present or past special projects...including work done in/with the Student Cooperative... that make, or would have made, the way nature works become an ally to increase well-being if organic psychology had been included as part of them.
This course can include a continuation of the work done for ECO 751

ECO 792: Advanced Readings in Applied Ecopsychology (3 credits)
This course explores books, journal articles, and other learning materials that make, or would have made, the way nature works become an ally to increase well-being if organic psychology had been included as part of them.

THE CHALLENGE EXAM FORMAT

A Challenge Exam is an exam for which students don’t have to follow additional courses (if they have already achieved the Applied Ecopsychology (AE) knowledge required for the exam by having achieved Level One Certification in AE). Candidates can simply take a Challenge Exam without formally taking a specific course. They may know the material from personal or work-related experience and add AE to it.

The Challenge is for Certification Level 1 students to produce an essay exam that enables the student to meet academic requirements for all or parts of one or more of our 700 Series courses.  This is accomplished by providing evidence that they have already mastered the Applied Ecopsychology (AE) knowledge that could have been applied to a prior topic, experience or skill, or in their present training or profession.  For example, a massage therapist could show how she could have added AE to her past ten years of work as a therapist and thus pass the challenge exam for "AE and Massage Therapy."

As a petition for credit for past experience and AE, the essay begins with a review of a skilled practice, professional methodology, or other activity, conveying knowledge gained from personal, educational or work-related experience.  The student then convincingly explains how Applied Ecopsychology could be, or could have been, integrated into a practice, professional methodology, or other skilled activity to enhance it.

For Challenge Exam Petition strategies see http://www.ecopsych.com/challengestrategy.html

Students receive one credit in one of the 700 courses for every 15 hours of learning (accompanied by 30 hours of experience) that they document via a challenge exam. (45 learning-experience hours total equals one Carnegie Unit)

Title: ECO 7xx A petition for _______ number of credits for _______ hours of equivalent education and training.

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."

-Stephen Aizenstat

In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally share with natural systems and their eons of experience. Our subconscious hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.

-Michael J. Cohen
