The Earth Avatar Track

Track Description and Rationale

The PNC Earth Avatar Track is for Citizens of Industrial Society (CIS) who recognize that humanity evolved as part of our non-literate Planet Earth in the non-literate solar system whose center is the non-literate Sun that we felt-sense experience as a bright, moving object in the sky and the daylight it provides. This is self-evidence of its and our existence.

CIS are caught in a dilemma. In the past when our ancestors encountered challenging non-literate natural environments their thinking and feeling became increasingly attracted by, attached to and dependent upon literate story ideas that they created and then manifested as more human-friendly, controlled environments than those of the perfection that produces nature’s varying climates and ways. They created the Zoo we are born into. The immediate rewards from acting out these stories emotionally bond us to making and heeding them in the Zoo.

Today, our excessively indoor, nature-disconnected places, thoughts and feelings are the way we are kept in the cages of the Zoo that our Industrial Society stories have built for us to live in. Confined by the Zoo we become psychologically dependent upon it for our survival and addict to its excessive disconnection from nature’s self-correcting and balancing powers.

As our Zoo incarceration deadens our senses, our body, mind and spirit loses contact with the wisdom of our planetary Mother Earth and its perfection. The bars of our personal cages consist of our attachments to artificial, literate, excessively indoor ways and ideas. The bars separate us from nature’s healing and restorative powers in and around us. Being born and raised in our CIS Zoo and its nature-estrangement is a legally enforced separation of us from our Earth Mother. This is a painful source of our personal, social and environmental disorders.

Our sterile, nature-separated way of life in the Zoo places our Other Body, the life of our Planet and ourselves at risk as well as makes it inaccessible as an antidote for our dilemma. We learn that the Zoo’s remedies for the Zoo’s disorders come from the Zoo and its stories. It is reasoning as if we have lost our watch in the woods and train ourselves to look for it under a street lamp downtown because the light is brighter there.

Our culturally-biased, nature-separated thinking is a predicament that is similar to the factory manager who was losing money and sought professional advice: "Only hire adequate people," a business analyst told the manager, "Ask prospective employees, 'How much is 2 + 2 and hire the person who gives the most reasonable answer."  The first candidate that the manager interviewed for a new job said, "2 + 2 = 22."   The second candidate said "2 + 2 = 5."  The third said, "The answer to 2 + 2 could be 4 or 22 depending upon your meaning," and then added, "I love gathering complete information and considering long term effects to come up with the best possible solution for a problem"  The manager selected the second candidate who said 2 + 2 = 5.   "But, why?" asked the astounded analyst.   "She's the boss's wife," came the reply.

As part of nature, we are in trouble because the boss we listen to is the writer and rulebook of the Zoo that our society has built and that we are born into. The Zoo economically and socially rewards us for increasingly supporting our nature-deficient, disconnecting and conquering stories thereby strengthening the Zoo. The stories are blueprints produced by of our sense of literacy, an ability that is absent in our non-literate Other Body. Being abstracts, not reality, our stories often distort rather than understand and support the ways of our Other Body, of non-literate Nature/Earth in and around us.

Captivated in the Zoo, the thoughts and feelings of our natural body, mind and spirit are out of tune with nature for over 99.9 percent of our life. We spend on average, over 95 percent of our lifetime indoors, closeted from how nature works in self-correcting balance and beauty of which we are part.

The disastrous loss to CIS of fulfillments from nature’s organic ways makes us want continuously. Our unsatisfied wanting produces the runaway greed, excessiveness and disorders that we suffer. They are the products of our increasing dependencies on our less than adequate, nature-substitute, economic, physical and social habits and their destructive personal and environmental effects.

We are biologically conceived as children of Mother Nature to suckle the loving breast of her health, balance and beauty. Upon our birth into Industrial Society, it is as if it socializes us to suck instead a bottle of whiskey. For the remainder of our lives we suffer the destructive effects of the whiskey unless we wean ourselves from it.

The point source of today’s unsolvable CIS problems is the Boss that disconnects us from the powers of authentic nature, in and around us. As demonstrated by the results of Educating Counseling and Healing with Nature (ECHN), applying The Hidden Organic Remedy for our disconnection helps us solve these problems. The wisdom of ECHN becomes the new Boss. It empowers us to invite nature itself to enter the zoo and help us remove the addictive anti-nature stories in our psyche, the bars of the cages that imprison us.

Without direct sensory contact with authentic nature via ECHN, our CIS stories often motivate us to become zookeepers and reinforce our zoo-bar problems rather than becoming ECHN practitioners who help us dissolve the bars by making genuine sensory contact with our Other Body at will and empowering others to do likewise.

CONCLUSION: We are in denial that the Boss and whiskey that disconnect us from our Other Body/Earth, in and around us makes us produce and suffer our dualistic individual and global disorders. As Earth Avatars, learning how to, at will, connect our body, mind and spirit with our Other Body “higher power” and help others do the same, is a reasonable and practical singularity antidote for our dilemma.

Recipient of the 1994 Distinguished World Citizen Award, Applied Ecopsychologist Michael J. Cohen, Ph.D., is a Program Director of the Institute of Global Education where he coordinates its Integrated Ecology Department and Project NatureConnect. He also serves on the faculty of Portland State University and the Akamai University Institute of Applied Ecopsychology whose program he initiated and has directed since 1990. In 1965, Dr. Cohen discovered that Planet Earth acted like a living organism and based on this he founded sensory, Gaia based, degree granting Environmental and Expedition Education outdoor programs independently and for the National Audubon Society and Lesley University. He conceived the 1985 National Audubon International Symposium "Is the Earth a Living Organism," at the University of Massachusetts and established the science of Organic Psychology in 2005 and Natural Attraction Ecology in 2008. He is the Editor of the Journal of Organic Psychology and Natural Attraction Ecology and an award winning author of ten books dealing with Applied Ecopsychology including "Educating, Counseling and Healing With Nature," "The Web Of Life Imperative," "Reconnecting With Nature" and, new,"The Hidden Organic Remedy: Nature as Higher Power." Dr. Cohen is also an accomplished folk song artist and contra dancer who presents traditional music programs using guitar, banjo and accordion for the U.S. National Park Service and Skagit Valley College Road Scholars on San Juan Island, Washington.
