Abstract and Overview

Abstract

We create the conflicts and disorders that we and the environment suffer because we are in denial. Our literate society does not accept the fact that Planet Earth/Nature is our non-literate Other Body or that, like puppets, we are socialized to spend over 99.9 percent of our lifetime out of tune with our Other Body’s perfection. The stupid prejudice against Nature story that our literate body learns devastates the genius our natural integrity of our Other Body/Earth in and around us. It renders our total body mind and spirit to become a broken computer whose "I am wonderful" short circuit can’t fix itself so it disintegrates our and Earth's wholeness.

We desperately need help from the non-literate wisdom and eons of our Other Body, but no surprise, when it is made available our frazzled thinking rejects it.

Fortunately the science of educating, counseling and healing with nature provides us with a solution for our madness. This hidden organic remedy (THOR) enables the intelligence of any individual's 54 natural sensibilities to, at will, embrace nature’s attraction to connect with our Other Body and its purifying and restorative powers in natural areas, backyard or backcountry. Sadly, our society’s story responds to this wonderful reunification as if it was incest.

I Have Two Bodies, So Do You

Since its beginning the Big Bang Standard Universe of macro Nature including Planet Earth constantly displays motion and direction. It is a non-literate Dance with attitude, a singular team of natural attraction webstrings whose individual and common thrust moment by moment through the eons has been and continues to be to follow its attraction to expand and grow more attractive by becoming more alive and diverse without producing garbage, imbalance or abusiveness.

MACRO: The sole natural attraction essence of the non-literate macro Dance continually builds time and space everywhere. Its wholeness and essence is present in each moment.

MICRO: The macro Dance includes the micro resonating, pulsating, sway and rhythm of its dancers moment by moment. The dancers are all the things that are found in the Standard Universe including materials, attractions, our body, mind and spirit, senses, sensations, sensibilities, thinking, feeling, intelligence, relationships and actions.

Our Living Planet

As part of Nature, Planet Earth’s web of life since its beginning has consisted of non-literate plant, animal, mineral and attraction energy dancers. They are connected by webstring attraction relationships that are constantly growing more attractive.

In the Earth’s total web of life, only humanity is literate. In addition, only part of humanity knows itself and the world in Citizens of Industrial Society (CIS) word stories that exalt themselves to say, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the word was God.” No matter its origin, the Word, by neither understanding nor incorporating the non-literate, non word callings of our Other Body/Earth, constructs nature-isolated stories that underlie, build, capture and cage our Other Body in a nature-disconnected Zoo, a story based global theme park that is designed and modified by the inaccuracies and misunderstandings of its Word/Story.

With few exceptions, the dominating economics and prestige of the Zoo sustains the Zoo by omitting, demeaning, exploiting and conquering the ways and means of our Other Body/Earth and its non-literate communications/communion.

Caged by the story bars of the Zoo, our Other Body is painfully restricted and injured by its imprisonment. It resents and rebels against being socialized by the Zoo to “better itself” by becoming a Zookeeper.

In its wisdom, our Other Body's sense of reason recognizes that if “In the beginning the Word was God,” then the Zoo invented that God and it daily suffers from the disastrous effects of its self-deception.

Misguided literacy domination produces the Zoo and its destructive discontents

Your/My Literate Self

The 54-sensibility dance of my literate self that is writing this paragraph and thinking in words, recognizes that the natural attraction Dance of my non-literate self is also my non-literate Other Body, Planet Earth. My Other Body does not recognize what I’m writing or thinking in words so I am actually talking behind its back. There is danger in doing that.

Any stories in my/our thinking that disconnect us from, or demean or assault our Other Body/Earth are toxins. They create pollution and injure my Other Body and its non-literate dance, in and around me. This stupidity produces our madness and disorders as it injures our whole Earth body and us as part of it and nature.

Invoking the PNC ECHN nature-connection process unifies and strengthens both of our bodies to the benefit of all parts of the web of life, including us.

Our great challenge is that our CIS stories teach us to have a lifetime of experience with micro dancers and dancing while not learning to recognize and include the macro dance of nature as an equally present and important part of our personal dance at any given moment. This omission initiates the unbalance and disorders that we suffer because it separates our body, mind and spirit from the unifying/healing/restorative qualities of the macro dance.

Recipient of the 1994 Distinguished World Citizen Award, Applied Ecopsychologist Michael J. Cohen, Ph.D., is a Program Director of the Institute of Global Education where he coordinates its Integrated Ecology Department and Project NatureConnect. He also serves on the faculty of Portland State University and the Akamai University Institute of Applied Ecopsychology whose program he initiated and has directed since 1990. In 1965, Dr. Cohen discovered that Planet Earth acted like a living organism and based on this he founded sensory, Gaia based, degree granting Environmental and Expedition Education outdoor programs independently and for the National Audubon Society and Lesley University. He conceived the 1985 National Audubon International Symposium "Is the Earth a Living Organism," at the University of Massachusetts and established the science of Organic Psychology in 2005 and Natural Attraction Ecology in 2008. He is the Editor of the Journal of Organic Psychology and Natural Attraction Ecology and an award winning author of ten books dealing with Applied Ecopsychology including "Educating, Counseling and Healing With Nature," "The Web Of Life Imperative," "Reconnecting With Nature" and, new,"The Hidden Organic Remedy: Nature as Higher Power." Dr. Cohen is also an accomplished folk song artist and contra dancer who presents traditional music programs using guitar, banjo and accordion for the U.S. National Park Service and Skagit Valley College Road Scholars on San Juan Island, Washington.
