Organic Contra Dancing and the Life of Nature

 We call our weekly contra dance on San Juan Island an organic dance with an organic band, caller and dancers because it and we are home grown/local.  Our dance's essence is unpolluted and restorative. With joy we share and teach it to each other free of charge because it actualizes these values for some of us. 

It’s as if we are dancers in the beautiful family dance of Nature's global life community with sunlight and everything else in peaceful balance. I call that organic essence Natureness. The essence of its truth explains itself in words while we delightfully use its energy to dance our troubles away.

I informally began contra-dancing and calling in 1945 long before I started teaching the Nature-Connected Psychology of educating, counseling and healing with nature. Contra  Dancing was  part of the glue and "gluons" that held my revolutionary education communities together.

Sometimes contra dancers discover my Natureness background and do workshops or courses with me because it strengthens their lives.  The outcome of this blend has at times been staggering, so much so that we had a half-hour consensual waiting period before folks drove home. Due to their contra dance epiphanies, their concentration was not what it should have been as a drivers. One person had driven off the road and others suffered similar incidents.  Their thoughts and feelings were on contra dancing with the Universe and Nature. That beneficially strengthened their body mind and spirit. It was fun and safe as long as they were not driving distracted at the same time.

The essence of the contra/universe blend was that since we were contra dancing in a scientifically determined Universe, scientifically, every part of the dance was also part of the Universe and its aliveness.  This is because the resonance of the Universe is, moment-by-moment, creating its own time and space to dance in. Since forever, Nature's dance is its wordless love to begin life. We, and everything else are part of, "at one" with our spacetime Universe, and vice versa. For this reason, if we are happy alive or community dancing, so is it. That's the organic core of contra dancing's Natureness.

In Industrial Society we live over 99 percent of our lifetime with our body, mind and spirit out of tune with Nature. Our thoughts, feelings and acts are paid to disconnect from our origins in the life of the Earth and Universe and turn it into money. This creates a felt-sense of something important being missing in our lives.  The loss stresses our body, mind and spirit. It produces our hurt and disorders along with our destructive means to avoid or tranquilize our pain.

Contra Dancing reconnects us with Nature wordlessly loving to begin life. That explains why my workshop participants’ stress subsided and their psyche relaxed.  It was a wonderful high, just not safe for driving. Sadly, when we are out of tune with the dance we return to being out of tune with Nature.

Strange as it might seem, the contra dance/Natureness dance blending workshop led some folks to look for evidence of contra dancing in the Universe, and vice versa. Stranger still, they began to find them.  By the end of one workshop, each motion or figure in the dances was also found somewhere in the Universe, including in our DNA and 54-senses and feelings. It was as if we were contra dancing in or through the Hubble telescope.

"Moment-by-moment, our 54-sense, turning, moving, spinning, being, music, rhythm, connection, community, partnerships, sharing, contact, love energy, swirling, no garbage, no toxins, unified diversification, attractive and grounded, purity; it was like we all became a love song individually and collectively, words and music harmonically combined in a dance form that some folks call the “Most fun on the planet.”
You are the Universe in ecstatic motion.

Part A’: Orbit 240 degrees around the Solar System then binary around the next white dwarf.

Part B: Wave and binary the planet you passed.

Part B’: Weak force Milky Way across the Orbit and magnetize 180 degrees. Star around and meteor to the next Quark.
