The Rationale for Using Nature-Connected
Organic Psychology
We must learn to bring back
into our awareness the cooperative wellness relationships we
inherently share with natural systems within and around us. Our
contemporary mentality has been socialized to bury them out-of-sight
from its historic nature-conquering consciousness.
- Michael J. Cohen
THE ADVANCED THINKING OF EXPERTS
"Over the years, I've
spent a lot of time fighting. Fighting against logging, pollution,
nuclear power...as long as we fight all the time there's going
to be a winner and a loser...(we must) build bridges across to
the people who are fighting."
...- David Suzuki
"Our religion keeps reminding us that we aren't just will
and thoughts. We're also sand and wind and thunder and rain and
the seasons. All those things. You learn to respect everything
because you are everything. If you respect yourself, you respect
all things."
...- Least Heat Moon
"The human need for nature
is linked not just to the material exploitation of the environment
but also to the influence of the natural world on our emotional,
cognitive, aesthetic, and even spiritual development."
|
- Edward
O. Wilson
Harvard University Pulitzer Prize Recipient (To the American
Psychological Association National Convention) |
"Until mankind can extend the circle of his compassion to
include all living things, he will never, himself, know peace."
...-Albert Schweitzer
...Nobel Prize recipient
|
"Wilderness is the ultimate
encyclopedia, holding answers to more questions than we have
yet learned how to ask. That's the magic in you. You've
got it; let it out."
...- David Brower
"It is quite clear to
me after several years in the environmental movement that all
physical problems of man's impact on the environment - pollution
of the air and waters, the desecration of the land, the contamination
of the food chain - all start within the environment of man's
mind."
|
-Maurice Strong
Founder: the United Nations Environment Program
Co-Chair: U.N. Commission on Global Governance |
"One touch of nature makes
the whole world kin"
...- William Shakespeare
"Scientific research is based on the idea that everything
that takes place is determined by laws of nature, and therefore
this holds of the action of people."
"The significant problems
we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were
at when we created
them.".
...- Albert
Einstein

SENSORY ENVIRONMENTAL AND OUTDOOR
EDUCATION
Most people who have had
a good experience in nature understand the rationale of this
observation:
Severe burns may make burn
victims feel numb but they don't produce pain. This is because
the victim's burned nerve endings are damaged and become dysfunctional.
Extreme burn victims have been known to rationally draw up plans
for their own funeral up to their time of death.
Since we are genetically born
no different biologically and mentally than a hunting-gathering
natural person, our mentality's nervous and sensory system, along
with the rest of nature. is designed to learn, relate, be gratified
and healed from genuine contact with natural systems and their
extraordinary beauty, cooperative and recuperative powers around
and within us.
However, we are different than
nature. For over 99% of our lifetime, our contemporary indoor
socialization separates our thinking from natural systems and
their harmonic ways. Similar to burn damage injury, this numbs
at least 45 of our 53 natural senses. Their numbness is due to
the lack of these senses normal nurturing connections, exercise
and support in and from nature.
In the absence of these senses
and their contribution to our mind, we think differently than
the way the natural world works. Nature normally produces optimums
of cooperation, diversity and mutually supportive life relationships
without producing the garbage, loneliness, dysfunction and abusiveness
that mark our relationships.
Like a burn victim, our sensory
numbness lets our thinking feel no pain about being disconnected
from nature and about our loss of our mentality's inherent sensory
ability to help sustain in society the consensus and perfection
found in nature. Rather, that our disconnection produces destructive
competition for what has been lost, competition that is normal
and applauded in our society.*
As any good experience in nature
demonstrates, the opposite of the nature-disconnection equation
is easily attained. When we safely make sensory contact with
attractions in nature, our cut-off senses reconnect to their
natural origins and revive. We enable our psyche to experience
profound peace, satisfactions and thoughts while in nature as
well as be more open to cooperative relationships with our surroundings,
including people. Connections to nature help us passionately
bring to mind the grace and unifying powers of natural systems
that we biologically and spiritually hold in common. This satisfies
many of our otherwise destructive wants.
Connection to nature is easily
achieved at any level of decision-making or relationship-building
by including simple nature-connecting activities in these processes.
We must support leaders and teachers who value and use these
activities in order to further enjoy cooperative relationships
and their benefits.
[*Mental dysfunction/disorder:
to prevent the constant registration of the pain and frustration
of this separation, as well as from other emotional injuries,
the pain is placed in our subconscious where we can't ordinarily
experience it. However, to alert us to their danger, additional
separations or rejections activate that pain-stress-fear into
our awareness so we feel it, often inappropriately.]
A TOOL TO IMPLEMENT OUR DEEPER
HOPES AND VALUES
Overview of this Web Site's
Rationale and Implementation
Although our best minds entertain
many excellent observations and theories about why we need to
improve our relationships with the environment and each other,
we seldom have a process that enables us to implement them. The
process of nature-connected Organic Psychology is a tool to this
end.
Because we too often mentally
and physically live destructive nature-separated lives, in support
of ISPO, Project NatureConnect offers people the art and science
of Organic Psychology, a nature-reconnecting prevention and recovery
ecopsychology tool. This nature-based psychology helps our sense
of reason cooperatively increase wellness in ourselves and the
global web of life including people.
This nature-embracing way of
knowing enables dysfunctional thinking to safely tap into the
purifying recovery and healing powers in natural systems, backyard
or backcountry. Over time, the genuine contact of our mind with
the grace of our natural origins helps us transform destructive
psychological bonds into constructive social and environmental
relationships.
This advanced ecopsychology
is a hands-on, sensory way of knowing that even a child may learn
in order to restore our natural ability to think and relate in
more balanced and cooperative ways. The program is offered online
or on site, through subsidized training books, accredited courses,
degree programs, grants and internships. It increases our love
of natural systems of which we are part, and we protect and save
what we love. When we reconnect to the nurturing sustenance of nature, we emotionally
reconnect to survival and what is most deeply satisfying in our
human experience.
"At personal, local or
global level decision making it is necessary to include Organic
Psychology nature-connecting activities as part of the process.
The multitude of unifying powers and senses they bring into play
increases our ability to deal with our disorders through consensus."
- Michael J. Cohen
Or-gan-ic Psy-chol-o-gy:
1. The peaceful art
and science of building responsible relationships by thinking,
feeling and interacting while in conscious, sensory contact with
genuine natural systems and their unifying, restorative powers.
..2.
A nature-connected, non-polluting, counseling, education or healing
process whose rewards simultaneously strengthen natural systems
in people and the environment.
C0-CREATING WITH NATURE
Rationale to Help Increase
Cooperative Relationships Locally and Globally
That the whole of nature self-creates
its optimums of cooperation, beauty and life-in-diversity without
producing garbage demonstrates that nature operates by consensus
of attraction sensitivities; nothing is left out, everything
belongs. As part of nature we genetically inherit the ability
to operate this way whenever we genuinely connect our thinking
to the wholeness of authentic nature. Today, a sensory Organic
Psychology tool is readily available that enables us to make
this connection and thereby relate more cooperatively with each
other and the environment through consensus. Nature-connected
psychology can be incorporated in all decision-making functions.
To this end a free introductory exploratory
course is available on-line from Project
NatureConnect. The course also helps people increase stress
management, balance and wellness in their lives.
