In his new book Reconnecting With Nature: finding wellness
through restoring your bond with the Earth Dr.
Michael J. Cohen says, "If you don't believe we are addicted
to our destructive personal, social and environmental relationships,
just try to change them." The book is released by Ecopress
for Earth Day, April 22, 1997. Its theme is that our thinking
is mentally deficient when it is nature deficient. When we treat
our disorders as nature-disconnection addictions, they subside.
Dr. Cohen is an ecopsychologist with the Institute of Global
Education, a United Nations Non-Governmental Organization. He
shows that our inherent psychological fulfillments from contact
with nature are so powerful that when we disconnect from nature
and gain these fulfillments through destructive ideas or chemical
substitutes, we addict to the substitutes and their abusive effects.
Dr. Cohen's self-guiding book addresses the addiction problem.
It offers 24 potent nature reconnecting activities along with
case histories and scientific explanations. Cohen says, "The
book is a hands-on stress management tool. It rebonds our sensory
inner nature to the natural environment's integrity through 53,
not just 5, natural senses." Mastery of the book is spaced
over 30 days to produce lasting natural fulfillments, critical
thinking and self-worth.
"Nature reconnecting activities help reverse our runaway
troubles," observes Dr. Cohen. "Research shows they
provide a vital missing process that we need to establish peace
on Earth through peace with Earth. They beneficially nurture
our human relationships through tangible contact with the balance,
joy and love found in nature," he says.
One activity in Reconnecting With Nature has become the Global
Wellness and Unity Activity: "In Balance With Earth."
often used in conjunction with Earth Day. It is available, free,
via the internet http://www.ecopsych.com/nstpactivity.html by postal mail for use in Earth Day
and other celebrations. According to Dr. Cohen, "This activity
lets our thinking begin to make conscious contact with the 'higher
power' found in Earth's wisdom, cooperation and beauty. You can
use it to safely build fun, responsible connections with people
and places."
Dr. Larry Dossey, M.D., the bestselling author of Healing
Words says: "Dr. Cohen's compelling application of ecopsychology
connects us with the often ignored source of spirit and wellness
found in nature. His deeply felt chapters bind us to energies
that help heal our deeper being." Prevention Magazine notes:
"Readers will surely savor this extraordinary book."
Dr. Daniel Levine calls it, "Critical thinking as if nature
mattered."
