Homepage                                                                                 SHE IS ALIVE: BONES OF THE MOTHER An Organic Psychology Report from an Online Course Participant As I was walking in the woods near my home in the summer of 1995, I noticed an interesting stone in the forest floor. It was pearly, with delicate pink stripes and a satisfying chunky angular shape. It was beautiful there in the forest floor, poking its head up out of the soft, rich earth with a pine-needle comforter on top. It felt alive to me when I touched it, and I knew that it would tell me something wonderful. It felt masculine. I asked whether I could pick it up in order to hold it and feel it and see it better, and it said, "Yes, do. Let me show you something." It spoke with a feeling and a knowing in my heart.  So, I gently pulled it out of its bed. It was heavy, smooth, layered, and lovely. It felt like a friend. I brought it home with anticipation. I felt lucky and special, as if I was granted a great opportunity. I sat with it on the front steps of my home, closed my eyes, put both hands over it to feel what it had to tell me.  "Bones of the Mother", it said. The thought-feeling sounded like a gong through my entire being- it filled my body, rushed out from me, and filled the sky- it filled everything. I felt safe because these words had suddenly filled all of creation with love. "BONES OF THE MOTHER", it rang out again, even more powerfully. And there it was, my understanding. The stone was like bone. It reminded me of the pearly little nuggets of bone amongst my father's ashes, nuggets that I tucked and sprinkled and flung into his sacred places after he died. The stone was exactly like bone, as a matter of fact- and then I remembered that our bones are made of stone, too. All at once an image, in my mind's eye but also in me and through me, surged up and I knew: the earth is my mother, and these are her bones. The rivers and waterways are her pulmonary system, and the rocks are her skeleton. She is alive, just as I am alive- and she is a PERSON.  A person! Suddenly I became an ant on a picnicker's leg and a flea on the scalp of a dog, a tiny friend nestled in the fluffy outer layer of an incredibly loving giant who suddenly reached out to introduce herself. I almost lost my balance as my mind, heart, and body careened with this realization and everything it meant to me. It meant that I am not ever alone. It meant that I am a minuscule creature living with a very loving giant who supports and nurtures me and will even reach out and talk to me, teach me. It meant that Earth is a living creature deserving respect and consideration- someone, not something. It meant that when we pollute the streams, we are injecting poison into someone's bloodstream. It meant that maybe she can help us wake up so that we can re-learn how to live in harmony as we are born to do.   The stone asked me to wash it. I filled a bucket with water, and settled it down inside- and a magical transformation occurred. The dull, flat surface of the bone melted into a translucent pearly sheen, and I could see into it in a different way. "So much is inside me you can learn from me everything that is real in this life." I saw that by looking, and feeling into it, the bone would tell me many things about science, art, reason- about how life works, and who we are together.  Discover how to create moments that let Earth teach, Act now.
