The
Beneficial Effects of Applied Ecopsychology in Holistic Healing Schools and
Natural Health Degree Program Courses
Journaled Reports from Project NatureConnect Students
Environment Accepts Differences
I am able to notice that
before starting my holistic health practioner Applied Ecopsychology
classes that my internal mental state was much more chattery and more
constantly finding things to worry about. After two classes and a year
of ecopsychology the focus of my mental state is more quiet and more
resilient (resistant) to outside negative forces ideas and actions.
When I do get off track it is a quicker and shorter trip to get back on
track.
There is always more to learn about natural health and
healing and I don't expect myself to be perfect
anymore.
Instead of measuring myself against the perfect, at this point I prefer
to measure myself against how far I've come. I am certainly more
articulate in the themes and important issues for describing
ecopsychology to others. And I have achieved a significant shift in
what I seek. Instead of seeking out criticism and dissatisfaction I
think that a majority of my thinking and focus is now on seeking out
attraction and satisfaction. While attending this holistic healing
school I knew that I needed to work on recognizing and practicing
working with the 48 senses that I'm not very familiar with, and yet,
due
to various reasons, I did not. This was the one idea that I
did
not carry through on, however I did use ecopsychology to improve my
relationship with my daughter. The impact of this
one point
is so very large (On both me and my daughter) and so very important to
me. For me improving this is almost as important as achieving world
peace. In fact to the other morning my daughter had a hour-long blow up
trying to get ready for school and throughout the whole hour I was able
to maintain a peaceful attitude that was supportive and non-combative
were over a half hour late to school but I was successful in not
allowing any of the modern-day wranglers about time or my way of doing
things into into making things worse. I realize that I may not succeed
every day, but every time that I do succeed I make it more likely to
achieve later success.
My daughter attends a Nature based
school... In it she does not receive grades, but a check mark system
with check mark + (exceptional), check mark (good) and check mark -
(needs more work). There are no tests, but assessments. And these
grades 1 to 5 students are taught "Naturalist Skills". "Place based
Communications" , Place Based Living Skills" and "Reflection Skills",
etc. So, for example, the students are taught to use their senses...and
identify animals and plants in our area. The students have 20 minutes
of sensory training through wildlife games in the mornings with blind
folds on, so that they can learn to listen and smell and remain aware
of the environment around them...and remain connected to Nature. They
also have Ninja Forest Training too!
Their teacher built a tipi
beside the school with branches they had collected...and once erected,
they cooked berries and plants they had identified as edible and
collected from the B Green Trail near the school. When they are
called to come in from recess or from their secret spots on a saunter,
they use animal sounds to respond. There are no bells or buzzers. My
daughter is a Field Mouse, so she responds with sounds like a field
mouse. Each student also studies their particular animal and it is
shared with the class. In addition, the students are studying birds'
nests and identifying them. All this information will be gathered into
a book and taught to the kindergarten and preschool children within
their school by the older students. As a result of this wonderful
nature environment, my 8 years old daughter is studying grades 4/5 Math
and assessed at Grade 7 in her Reading skills. There are no bullies, no
judging and respect for others and the community is important. Even
children at a slower pace academically are cherished and nurtured in an
environment that accepts differences.
An Explosion of Love I
was attracted to return to the same place that I did the exercise
before. In fact I had many abortive attempts and realised that
Iīm still using story- based thinking rather than natural attraction
senses to do the exercises. It was my brotherīs birthday so
I went to the wooded area with my family. As we were making our
way there my sister received a phone call to say that her father (my
stepfather) had died. I was really able to see the natural health
attractions that come into play around this event.
I sat
close and supported my sister as she took the call, her friend took the
children away to the park and my mum took the dogs away. After
this my sister had a chance to walk away and have some time alone as
she crossed the river to the "ghosties" as this part of the wood is
called. I was in awe that my sister had a chance to be supported
by nature for this even if she wasnīt consciously aware of it. As
we sat there together I really got a sense that my sister was being
given an opportunity to process and heal from this immediately.
Webstrings had created this situation for this reason. Beautiful. When
I sensed it was ok to leave and do the exercise I got up and went
slightly deeper into the woods to gain permission as I was waiting for
consent my mother's dog started barking and I felt that I had consent
to enter deeper and do the exercise but to take the dog with me. Dog
as a natural attraction is providing a sense of companionship and
sharing. My experience in nature was highlighted watching the dog
follow its natural attractions and know that the beauty and joy of
where I was was shared by another natural being. It allowed a
deepening of connection especially when it became trapped under a tree
and my mother, sister and I joined together to free the dog. My
mother took the dog away and I was attracted to gain permission to sit
on a tree an let natural attractions help me find intelligence at
work. As I sat there I was naturally attracted to the
trees. They were providing support for the earth and for life
within the wood. They are giving shelter, food, oxygen and are
the true givers of life in the deepest sense. They are
intelligent in that they know when to grow, shed their leaves and to
dance in the wind providing shelter to less strong life within. I
was then attracted to a fern and realised that they are intelligent in
that they are not only givers of food but also help create shelter and
maintain balance within the wood. Moss is intelligent in that it blankets bare soil to prevent it from disappearing. The
noise within the wood is intelligent in that is provides a warning of
danger for those who heed it. It encourages caution and reminds
you to be ever alert for predators. The wind is intelligent in that it transports seed to encourage diversity and cleans away unneccessary dirt. The
birds singing is intelligent are they offer a means of expressing the
beauty of nature in song. They attract mates through this and can
help contribute to the cycle of life. The fly is
intelligent as it is a messenger. It carries bacteria so that it
can grow and eats some of the waste provided by nature so it is also
the equivilent of a garbageman. I have been aware of these
intelligences operating during the many times that I spent in these
woods when I was younger. I have just never consciously
acknowledged them until now. As I left the woods I gave
thanks by speaking out aloud what I had gained from my experience and
what I was grateful for. I felt an explosion of love and joy as I
did this and I walked away smiling. I learned from all
this is that everything in nature is in balance and supports each
other, that intelligence exists in everything and that a sharing of a
natural experience is far more powerful that experiencing it only by
yourself. If the attractions I experienced in this activity were taken
away from me I would still be struggling to understand the meaning of
community and be feeling more isolated that now. This
experience increased my trust in nature as it showed me that nature
wants the best for us and will support us. It highlighted that we
need this connection so truly thrive and helped re-educate my sense of
community and how a community should function. Connecting
with nature provides us with a natural intelligence that shows us the
way to truly live. Working in harmony with it means that we all
understand our part in the success of the world. Into my
thinking I am putting a deeper understanding of community and
connection and how with natural intelligence everything knows what to
do that is of benefit to all instinctively and does this automatically
without discussion or resentment. Sleeping on this
experience has re-inforced this idea for me and I find myself asking
permission to connect with nature at every opportunity now.
