Nature Kinship and Wild Weed Identity
A Course Participant's Report:
I tugged a bit at the weed and felt how easily I could pull it from its moorings in the loamy dark thin soil where it lived at peace with the other weeds in its little wild family-clump. I felt the desire grow in me not to disturb its moorings, that I wanted to gain and learn from my attraction to it, but how easily I could hurt it, this tough little weed. I have to be careful not to dominate or overpower it with brute strength. My muscle could easily rip it out by its roots. And what would my hand do with my victim?--would I drop it on the tar road, would I stuff it in my pocket? I felt its existence as part of its own world and that it wants to be there for its material cycle, next to the water, in spare soil blowing in the breezes, going nowhere special, doing nothing all that special or important but just as important in that time and space as I, or another person, or a car parked on the dock.
I felt a kinship with this wild weed, the roots of another. I felt compassion for a weed--with it, I felt it and me. I see that I am fulfilled in relationships where I relate deeply but am not involved in give or take. I can be uplifted, humbled, and educated deeply by a weed, a dried out piece of overgrown grass.
I was turned-off at first by the appearance of the weed but, using our course's consent process, I asked its permission to engage with it. As I waited for its consent I looked more closely, saw more about it and was more and more closely drawn in by attraction and, finally, rewarded.
The weed reminded me that I feel possessive of things and people I am attracted to. Doing this activity showed me my wrangling desire to possess attractions for the moment even if I had no permanent plans for them, that I didn't want them permanently.
I would feel weakened if the ability to discoveer an identity with a wild weed was unknown to me or taken from me, leaving me more at the mercy of my desire to dominate nature. This kinship activity, in the end, made me feel like a better person therefore I like myself more.
