I DON'T HAVE TO GO AWAY FROM HOME TO BE ON VACATION
An Organic Psychology Report from an Online Course Participant
My life's great yet I still want a vacation ... I was not going to agree that I have a deadened awareness, however, upon reflection ... my awareness *is* deadened. I am more enlightened than some about our well-being, but there is so much more to discover not only about the damage to our planet and our psyche, but also how it's damaged me and how I am continuing to damage the planet.
I have been making small changes in my own life - - very small. Recycling more (and more!), switching to those more energy efficient light bulbs, saying "no, I don't need a bag," and other such small items. And those do help if everyone did a few small changes, then it results in big changes. And I have been voicing to my family lately that I want us all to be more aware of the effect our house, our household and each of us individually has on the environment ... but at the same time, there's been some denial. I don't know exactly how to explain it. Part of it comes down to the fact that I'm out in the public more and more talking about nature ... and I'm feeling a little bit of a disconnect in that I'm not living as wholly in the birth of a picture I eventually see for myself.
I was also going to add a bunch of stuff here on the subject of a vacation from life ... but it started going down an alley of story telling that I'm not sure is appropriate for the course. I'll just put this ... that I do love my life, and I also do long for a vacation from the routine parts of it. Maybe I'll be able to examine this more fully later, when I've reflected better on the meaning for me.While on vacation now, I've done some of our nature-connection activities to see if they help with the question of my being on vacation..
On this activity I was attracted to the trunk of a pine tree.
It is a home to fungus, birds, insects and other living organisms, it stabilizes the sandy earth and it roots search for water, it is very grounding, provides support, it stretches to the heavens and roots into earth. It has a interior that provides nourishment from root to crown. All this life does not go on vacation, rather its life is its vacation. As part of nature, is this true for my life, too?
The attraction was initially to the multi-colored nature of its bark, from off white to shades of grey, light to deep green and tan to umber. It was speckled in places and had the look of peeling away of layers. I began to feel as if it was reflecting the changes in color, tone and texture that has been morphing in my life for a long time and has sped up within the last two years. The letting go of the old and the birthing of the underlayer. How perfect, how totally refreshing and reassuring that it is safe to release the old for the new.
I am attracted to a sweet bird that sings at sunrise and at sunset in the same tree. It is the song of a new day and in the evening that it is time to rest. There is work to be done by eating insects and plant life and then dropping the by-product to support the cycle of life. The sound stops me every time and reminds me of how perfect our natural circadian rhythms can be in sustaining a healthy life. This is an aspect of our disconnect that has had very serious consequences for body, mind and spirit wellness. This bird reminds me everyday that on a natural level, I'm on vacation every day.
I recall walking out of our house last month, early one morning and being immediately attracted to a droplet of dew on a leaf. It glistened and I bent down and just watched as the sun came out and began to evaporate the dew. I was mesmerized by the efficiency of the receiving and the giving exchange of water and all of life. It felt like I was on vacation.
I've become profoundly appreciative of the way natural intelligence knows exactly what to do to sustain all life. It is truly a constant state of miraculous! And it's available as my home no matter where I am.
Natural sensory attractions are available everywhere, they are an intelligence that people in industrial society seldom learn to celebrate and too often deny or abuse. I think that's why we need vacations.
I've come to realize the I don't have to go somewhere to be on vacation to strengthen my spirit. As St. Basil said, "Where ever you may go, the least plant my bring you clear remembrance of the Creator."

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."
-Stephen Aizenstat
In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our subconscious hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.-Michael J. Cohen
