TOPIC: Help Wanted: Environmental Education Counseling and Healing with Nature Online. Too often troubles and debts result from our leaders socializing us to obtain emotional fulfillment in excessive, expensive and irresponsible ways. Deep, renewing environmental satisfactions that remedy this are always available, free of charge, through sensory nature-connecting activities in natural areas, backyard or backcountry. Learning and teaching these organic activities enable us to benefit from the grace balance and restorative powers of natural systems within and about us.

NOTE:

This page offers valuable rewards to individuals who recognize four basics of Organic Psychology:

1. We are part of nature and it sustains the global life community without producing our garbage, disorders or abusiveness.

2. Natural systems pervade nature and are self-correcting. They recycle, purify and nurture wherever they flow, including our psyche.

3. We excessively suffer our disorders because we don't connect with nature's grace, balance and restorative powers to help us remedy our troubles.

4. We spend, on average, 98 percent of our life indoors, separated from nature. To our loss, our thinking and feeling are extremely stressed and disconnected from nature's healing ways.

FROM TERROR TO HAPPINESS: FEELING LOVING AND HOPEFUL AGAIN

An Organic Psychology Report from an Online Course Participant

Dear Study Group,

I'd like to share a real life week experience, and how I used what we've been learning through our online studies with Project Nature Connect and organic psychology.

Monday after the move last weekend, I came home early from work to complete our nature-connecting course assignment. What I came home to was catching my twelve year old smoking marijuana in his bedroom. As the long story uncoils, it turns out he has been experimenting with drugs and cigarettes, but then it got worse. In his frustration of getting caught there was a big fight. I thought he was just in his room angry, but his sister went in to see if she could calm him down and found him cutting himself. It turns out he's been doing cutting on his upper arm for about a month now. He explained to me that he does it when he gets frustrated. It was so sad to see. Some of it is already scarred, some of it was scabbed, and some of it was fresh. He's been mutilating his body.

It may not have been the best reaction, but I went into total shock accompanied by fear, terror, sadness, frustration, anger. And once this was all out in the open and revealed, and because I stepped in as a parent trying to take over some control, every day since has been a challenge with a lot of acting out, fighting and obstinence, which we have never experienced together before.

So on top of the changes that moving brought, I now have a totally different situation with my son that took me by complete surprise.

After getting sick from the stress and worry and spending all day Friday just catatonic myself and crying, I woke up Saturday and knew I needed to start picking up the pieces and do something. But I didn't have any of my support team around. My two best friends were both out of town, as well as my own counselor. So what to do? How do I rebalance myself and start to step in and help my son before he continues to downward spiral himself any more? I'm using our nature activities that help us make thoughtful connections to attractions in natural areas. Although I've experienced this, and we're only ready and learning about it, I figured the whole point was to at some point share it with others. So why not begin to try it with David?

It was raining on Saturday, so I took him to the video store and we stayed in watching movies together. I explained to him that I don't feel my best or personally balanced when I don't spend at least a little weekend time outside, so I asked him, if it wasn't raining, if he would go hiking with me on Sunday. He surprisingly said yes.

Come Sunday it was a little hard to get him up and out, but I forced the point and we went.

One clue that I had that there might be some success in this is that back in June we were in the country side and he said something I'd never heard him say, "I just love all these trees, they're just beautiful. It makes me feel good to be out here. I like this." I was hoping for the same result today. Also we could talk and bond on trail. And outside of that I just put my trust in the sensory nature connections we haven't finished learning about, or can't put words to yet as the second part of chapter two said, maybe a natural attraction to the things that will help balance us. I needed that even for myself at this point!

We had a wonderful drive up to the redwoods and a beautiful hike. My son smiled and explored and talked and shared a lot of facts about nature with me. At one point I had to run back to the car to get a jacket. When I returned I found him climbing some big boulders covered in moss. He express to me that he felt really bad. He had slipped off one of the rocks and scraped off some of the moss. He said he felt bad for killing it. It was nice to see the care, concern and consciousness. We made points to stop a lot along the trail and touch rocks and plants and leaves. I also gave David the freedom to run ahead and explore smaller trails on his own perhaps to give him the space to make his own private connections he is still a teenager and I still am mom.

We got to the point in the trail where I usually like to turn around and return. He didn't want to. He said he was having fun.

Thank GOD a breakthrough. I said I'd bring him back after school this week and we can finish that trail and do others. He is looking forward to this.

So something happened at there in the woods today that does not happen in our home or even when we spend time together doing inside activities. We connected and balanced out by being in nature. And what was I attracted to? Everything. The trees, the boulders, the smell, the left over rain dripping from the branches above, the fresh air and rushing water down the streams and falls. I even enjoyed the mud. And David found himself attracted to the boulders and moss as well as the views. We both stopped and spent some time looking at ferns and how some grew in the rocks and others up the sides of trees. We didn't have too much to say, except we thought it was beautiful and although the words weren't shared out loud, precious. We were both happy and peaceful, you could see it in the tender way we handled the ferns, and you could see it in his eyes.

I also took time on trail to talk to David, amongst other things, about what we are studying, some of the theories, practices, and of course about web strings and why they are important for us to really be peaceful, healthy, happy and balanced. He made a funny comment that we will all understand, he basically expressed that he totally got it, but that if people knew they'd think he was a crazy mountain man. He later told me a story of how he hugged a tree once, but that bugs crawled up his shirt. I asked him if he liked hugging the tree. He did.

So, my son is a closet tree hugger ;-)

My experience today just goes to support what we have been learning and reading on this online course.

Of course it was healing for my son to have one on one time with me, but it was without doubt enhanced and helped along by making the nature connections. We would not of had the same peace and inner cleansing if we had simply gone to the mall or seen a movie. I can't fully explain it, and I imagine I don't have to to this group, but you could feel things happening. Like magic.

We left our experience in the woods smiling, energized, happy, connecting and looking forward to returning and doing more.

I am going to continue coming up with ways to connect with nature along with David, to keep me balanced, to deepen our connection together, and hopefully to help heal the things in him that currently have him turning to the drug, cigarettes and cutting behaviors.

If it is OK with the group, I'd like to continue giving updates on David and the outcomes of our connecting and learning from nature experiences.

As for where I feel now compared to this past week and even yesterday, I feel balanced, happy, loving and hopeful again. Quite a turn around from being immobile, sick and in tears on the couch just the days prior. I do have to report that for much of the hike I actually felt nauseous and dizzy but I think that was just the poison of the shock and fear of the week prior working itself out. By the end I felt cleansed and refreshed and now have the energy to think, feel and continue.

NOTE: The study group invited David to do the course online with them.

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."

-Stephen Aizenstat

In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our subconscious hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.
