Philosophical Growth from Sensing Nature
A Course Participant's Report:
I walked down to the beach I did an activity whose educational philosophy helps my ancient sensory way of knowing override my more newly evolved abstract story way of thinking. Then, as I stepped onto the sand, my whole body tingled. I felt very alive, very aware of my whole surroundings. I felt I was a single cell that had suddenly awoke to find it was not alone, but was surrounded by many other cells, all of different shapes, sizes, and functions.
I floated amongst all these other cells, looked around, and as I discovered the rest of my body, my whole being, I wondered what each of these other things or beings did in the functioning of the whole. Soon everything became part of my body, from each grain of sand, to the shells, birds, ocean, mountains, people, dogs and more
I felt no threat, no competition from these other parts of me. This felt wonderful, that there was more to me than I had originally thought, and I wondered how much more of me there was to discover out there, beyond what I could physically see from my current one cell perspective.
There were things that did not seem natural in this body of mine, and I had to wonder what their function was. There was no flow, no energy, they did not seem to fit in. I walked past them, for they did not seem like a part of me, even though they obviously must be, because they were there. Perhaps I would discover their purpose later.
The garbage that was occasionally littered here and there on the beach was disturbing, but I recognize that even within my own physical body, the are places where garbage resides. Sometimes it is easy to get rid of that garbage, sometimes it is difficult. I knew none of the garbage belonged here, just like my issues don't belong in me. For example, there was a very large sheet of plastic wrapped and twisted underneath a very heavy log. I thought this is like emotional baggage, or some large issue that I have trouble releasing. Since it seems difficult to release I walk right past it, and hope to get to it later.
Over all, my walk was very peaceful, and there were lessons in everything, I just needed to open to them. I continued along, very happy and peaceful, discovering new parts of myself. It was all beautiful. All One.
I learned that the world around me is a reflection of me, and an extension of my own body, mind and soul My connection to nature and everyone is growing stronger. I generated good feelings as I opened my eyes to what we do to others, we do to ourselves. We are all connected.
