ARTICLE: FIELD REPORT: an on line program participant, shares her results from a nature-connecting activity. THANKFULNESS FOR BRAIN SURGERY SUCCESS AND MY HUSBAND'S CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT Yesterday morning, as my husband was getting ready for work, I realized that I mostly wanted to do is raise the stakes for how I express my thankfulness with him and his employment struggle. My husband's job as a researcher is always subject to funding allocation. And recently the question of "Is the money going to keep coming in?" has once again reared its head. The atmosphere can become very stressful as people‚s jobs hang in the balance- including his own. As he once again got up and put on his tie to go out and face it all again, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for him. Two years ago he went through both brain surgery and unemployment, and yet there he was getting up and going to work with his unfailing commitment to being of service to his employer and to our family. But what gift of gratitude could I offer him? I looked around in my closet and located the fluffy turkey feather that I had picked up on our walk through the canyon the previous day. It had a lopsided appearance, looking as if part of it had been broken off. I went up to him and thanked him for all he was doing for our family & especially for his courage. Then I told him I had a gift for him. I handed him the turkey feather, pointing out both its beauty and imperfection. “This is to remind you that you don't have to be perfect,” I said. He seemed mostly amused but grateful for my gesture. When I suggested that he take it to work with him, he seemed not too keen on the idea of having a broken turkey feather at work with him. “How about if you keep it here for me” he said. It occurred to me later that I might have made more headway, if I had remembered to ask permission from him to do the activity with him. In any case, I felt prompted to persevere in “raising the stakes” of my thankfulness by giving him a gift that he could enjoy receiving. I went outside and selected a beautiful little stone from my garden. As he was walking out the door, I said, „O.K. how about this? This is a gratitude rock to help you remember how grateful I am for you.‰ He laughed & smiled. (I sensed that he recognized my reference to a story about the power of gratitude that came from carrying a “gratitude rock” that we had seen on the DVD, “The Secret.”) “Ah! A gratitude rock,” he said. Smiling- he placed it into his pocket, and went out to face the day. I learned the importance of not only feeling grateful, but of finding a way to express my gratitude and that acknowledgement of that which I am grateful for- breeds more for which to be grateful. If I want others around me to be grateful- I need to express my gratitude for them by acknowledging them for all they do in my behalf. Gratitude begets gratitude. I almost had my husband taken away by a cyst that was located deep in the center of his brain. I recognize how much I would miss him & how grateful I am for all he does each day to be of service to me and our children. The activity definitely enhanced my self esteem & re-educated the inner me- as I came to recognize myself as someone who is grateful and someone who instills gratitude. This is a pretty powerful thing to recognize yourself as being. And that is who I am. Gratitude begets gratitude. Gratitude heals the world. I awoke at peace. And I too am ready to face the day. I can feel that God is with me because I can feel my gratitude with me. I'm going to share this posting with my husband. I have a strong image of my husband's caring. He is my rock- or should I say- my “gratitude rock.” Act
now.
