At Home With a Wolf
An Organic Psychology Report from a Wyoming Course Participant
This morning I went to the rocky lake beach, my second home, and watched the sun sparkling on the ocean. Beautiful day but very windy. I thought of Keiko, the whale, originally from the Westmann Islands in Iceland, kidnapped and transported to a small tank in Mexico for entertainment. I thought of his confinement, his illnesses, his captivity. And then, finally, because of individuals raising money, his return to Iceland, his long and gradual release, the difficulties to get him to eat on his own, and his eventual ending up in Norway, where he died. I am glad he is now at peace.
Any creature removed from its cooperative environment wrestles with the new unknown one--as does the area to which it has been relocated. I think "I am like a wolf, originally living with my family in Wyoming. I am the last of my pack to survive, as my mate and children have been shot by ranchers. I have been trapped and shipped to new country in Montana, and released. I wear a tag and am monitored. I immediately wreak havoc among the ranchers of this new land--they are wary of me and construct ways to keep me out; the smaller animals run; I cannot find another wolf mate. I am not welcome here, but belonged where I used to live. My life is now tense and I run from something of which I don't understand. The air smells different, the trees are different, and the rocks. I search and run, and stop and rest alone.
Where am I? This is what refugees go through, all over the world. Being forcefully transported to an unknown, unfamiliar territory. Most of us relocate voluntarily, but when it is forced it must be horrific. I think of the Cambodians at the end of the Vietnam war, loaded onto the boats, relocating in the U.S. and other countries. Violation takes many forms...removal from one's natural home and heart is unconscionable." There are few places in nature where I am NOT at home...nature is my home.
There is a place, a secret kind of place, here in Wyoming, where it is sanctuary. I walk to the cliffs and nestle into the foot of the bluffs, where I have left a shell. I return to the shell--it has not been moved. >From here, I see an expansive lake, watch the gulls as they fly around above me. I am at one, completely. I am accepted as part of this setting; nothing feels more comforting or organic or real. Often I return, mentally, to this place. And when I move, I will also return there.
Forced displacement is cruel and affects both the party displaced and the area to which one is displaced. There is an original cooperative intention with natural environments and the life native to that area. We do not belong everywhere; to assume so is to be arrogant and self-serving. To lift life from its natural habitat or environment and profess to know what is best for it is destructive and usually has a devastating consequence. The human body is self-contained and is the "liferaft." This is wholeness.

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."
-Stephen Aizenstat
In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 95 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.-Michael J. Cohen
Benefit from learning to repair the natural psychic pulse within and around us. Add the sensory ecoscience of Organic Psychology to your life and livelihood.
