Nature and Sensory Disconnection
An Organic Psychology Report from a Virginia Course Participant
I went into my little garden for this activity. I covered my right hand (I'm right-handed) with two thick gloves. It was lovely and warm. I requested consent from the plants to partake in the activity and it was rather joyfully given. I was rudely shocked into my experience. I disliked it as soon as I placed the glove hand on plants and rocks. I wanted to rip the gloves off; they really irritated me.
I spent about 5-10mins walking around and greeting each plant and touching it and just felt bizarre. Perhaps an equivalent sensation would be trying to have a bath with my clothes on - physically uncomfortable and mindfully incorrect. However, I then thought, what if I didn't have my sense of touch? I took a few moments to 'centre' as some people call it. Then did the same walk around - meeting and touching each plant. My intuition, and non-physical senses were recognized and used to make connections. I forgot about the gloves.
I reread the activity later before doing this write-up and realized the point was to experience the disconnection. I did at first. I discovered that I not only dislike disconnection with nature, but am alarmed by it. I felt that nature wanted the connection with me and sensed my disconnection
After I connected I recognized that barriers are physical - people living, working, learning indoors. Barriers are also sensory/psychological/emotional/spiritual. Real experience in nature cannot be substituted with mental/abstract activity, but loss of any (possibly?) sensation does not by default mean total disconnection.
This activity made me feel great - as if nature had more (non-invasive) control than society. No matter what barriers society creates, nature's intelligent sensory calling find a way - if we allow them.
My 21-year-old daughter is maturing, finding childhood and innocence waving at her from behind, in the form of body changes, new opportunities and challenges, aging parents and a dying grandfather. But nature registers in her. She is fully aware that turning is constant and imminent. She smiles, and I am glad to know her. She is connected with the nature of simplicity, the pure clear nature of mind. It is worth nurturing and cultivating. She knows full well that it is resonant and always present in nature.
I know that she is aware of the war against nature that is ongoing in our culture, and is devoting herself, in whatever way makes sense, to stopping it; sometimes in very subtle ways, a small act, a kind gaze, the very note of hello. She knows that the more you participate in the peace process, the more the life spirit in you gains fulfillment and satisfactions so that it wants to remain in you, rather than disturb or abandon you.
