I love these courses based on reconnecting with Nature. There's is such a need. And why it is so important to me is because, I always wanted to start a school when I was a kid, because I hated being locked in these unpleasant rooms. Schoolrooms. They could be smelly, cluttered and awkward. I never felt right in institutionalized environments. I wanted to start a Life School. One that honored our emotions and feelings. One where we were outside more than inside. Smelling the fresh air. Talking to the animals and birds. Feeling the sun. I wanted to have freedom to express myself and have fun. Nobody ever taught how to be in life. All we did was follow.
That little girl is still inside of me and the thought of creating a school excites me and frightens me. I really honor Nature and Diversity and am so honored to be a part of this whole journey with you all.
I would like to see emphasis on the importance of nature connecting of children by their parents. Psychologically we connect by bonding as Konrad Lorenz demonstrated by his work with goslings. Skinner's behavioural modification work relied heavily on psychological bonding. Bonding is strongest during the first few years of life. One change brought about in large part by realizing the importance of maternal bondong has been the return to breast feeding. The movement to home births away from hospital births is another change similarly motivated. Thomas Berry harks back to the American Indian tradition of bonding the new born child with Mother Earth along with the natural human mother. In Voice of the Earth Theodore Roszak writes of the 'enchanted child'.
The children in the developed world are prevented from bonding with nature. Children spend over 90% of their time inside nature excluded buildings. What children are bonded to are sterile rooms televisions computers and cars. It is little wonder that people care little of the degradation of nature by consumerism.
The advertising industry understands bonding and so children from the youngest age are targeted. Now children's demands for consumer products pressures the purchasing by their parents which further creates their material environment and their psychological environment. Both determine their values as adults. Hence a vicious cycle in which successive generations are less bonded to and more disinterested in nature.
The big bonus individually of a child who is bonded to nature is that s/he is psychologically immunized against the lure of adverts making the individual a mindless consumer buying to pursue happiness but finding alienation and depression. When people and circumstances turn unfriendly comfort can always be found in nature by such an individual. Bonding with nature as a child may be seen as a necessity for freedom and happiness. An emphasis on nature connecting for children is needed for hope to develop a society that believes nature is important and has intrinsic worth.
