This activity was really meaningful for me because of my recent eye problems. I have been trying to feel what was around me instead of verbalize things. It is a slow process, but due to the physical necessity of having to do that, coupled with this course, I am slowly but surely developing new natural sensory connections within my own life.
I did this activity right outside my classroom door. I was waiting on my daughter to arrive and the recent snow we had was melting into a little stream of water trickling down the pavement onto the football field. I was drawn to it's motion, color and sparkle and even where it was going. It was beautiful, simple and yet intense enough to carry me away with it in it's journey. Once my daughter arrived, we both just sat and starred at the water for the longest time. It was great.The quotes that stood out to me were "They feel foolish or ashamed about what other people will think if they are seen hugging a tree or seeking consent from an attractive cloud to ask it an important question." "We do not have these inhibitions as children; we learned them from being rejected for those behaviors......" This is so true....we so often base our own feelings on what others think when we should base our feelings on what nature teaches us.
The most important things I learned was again, not to base who I am on what others think, to know that all changes, no matter how great or small are significant and finally that I am valuable. My connections with nature and this course are my natural support for those things. I would be very sad to have this taken from me....I have really struggled to get to this point of self-worth and nature nurturing me.
This activity has been a key point in enhancing my sense of self-worth because it has taught and reinforced my trust in nature and not what my past has negatively taught me.
