In the woods just south of our house I sat on a stump surrounded by young saplings, facing the river, and thought aboout the house. The Sun was visible and still low enough in the sky to make shadows. Playing over my body were the gently swaying forms of the saplings. I was warm enough to be comfortable, and aware that I was in my "outside in" room. Without thinking about it too much, the immediate attraction was the sound of wingbeats.
As I sat there waiting for something to come to me as consent, and the wingbeats continued to surround me as birds of all types were flitting here and there, I realized that they were indeed it. Each thing that caught my gaze was followed by a wingbeat, and every time I took in that soft flutter sound, it got louder and louder.
The house I had in mind was our own, which is facing due south, half in the woods and half outside of it. I asked the woods what it would be like if we hadn't built our structure, about 20 years ago. Well I do sort of know the answer, because I remember what it looked like, and to some degree, what it felt like in the section where our house now stands. But back then, I don,t think I looked with quite the same eyes as I do now. If the space underneath our house had been left to "turn" on its own, it most likely would look and feel like what I was now experiencing. In the theater of life here the soft symphony of wingbeats-- a composition so utterly sweet and honest! I was in a magic room, as if one were walking down a hallway, opened a door and then walked into the enchanted forest, owned by the birds. Chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, woodpeckers, crows, goldfinches, cardinals, starlings all absorbed in their real life concerns. I even saw the diminutive brown creeper,"heard" him too, as he talked in his quiet tones to himself.
The cacophony of sounds and goings on made it seem like a very busy place, which I''m sure it was, but that was not my overwhelming impression. It was more like a friendly and sacred room. No doubt it would have extended into the space that our house now occupies if we had not chosen this present spot to live.
No we didn't ask permission to build our house where we did, lo those many years ago. I didn't know about those ideas then. (I sure would now.) And yes, Nature might have called our built environment an anomaly, an unnatural object, because it didn't grow out of the soil. It is constantly trying to change it back into forest again, bit by bit, with moss and lichen growing on the older parts, paint crumbling off of doors, etc. Though we took some of Nature's space for our own, we took great pains to take only what we felt was fair, and incorporated many of nature;s operating principles into the project.
