An Organic Psychology Report from a Ohio Course Participant
I visited a disused railway track & bridge that is wildly overgrown with plants. It is an area I only know briefly. Sinewy stems move in and out of old steel railings, strong weeds sprout out between cracks and large shrubs obscure the concrete walls of the bridge.
I have no one else to do this with, so went alone. I received my consent to enter the area as well as support for the activity. At first, my sense of sound dominated. Once my eyes were closed I relied heavily on what I could hear. Once I realized this, I pretended I couldn't hear either, and asking for further support from the area I started to sense very differently.
I put myself into odd positions so that when I opened my eyes the vista was a surprise. I greatly enjoyed seeing pattern and form instead of the whole plant, which I would normally see if walking towards it with eyes open. Also, smelling and touching, before seeing.
There were many weeds and plants and I used my sense of trust, smell, taste, touch, recognition of form and intuition to know which I could eat from and which I shouldn't.
Again, I walk along the trail. It is very cold, and after a warm, winter, the cold chills me quickly. I am greeted by the warmth of the sun as I round a bend as I ask permission to interact here. As I walk the activities questions are especially meaningful . . .
I thank the sun for illuminating this area and warming me and the earth.
Through my eyes, I see, I feel, I experience, I am . . .
When I turn moving my eyes into the shadow, my eyes and face feel cold, where they felt warm before, when facing the sun. The value of clouds, like the shadow of my eyes is to provide coolness and respite when the heat of the sun can be scorching.
When I face the sun again, the senses that tell me the sun is still shining are, sight ~ the sun brightens everything, touch ~ the sun warms my face, smell ~ the sun warms the crisp smell of frozen air, inspiration ~ in the sunlight the ground swells and breathes as she releases it from the frozen blanket.I learned that I remembered the ability to trust all my senses instead of rely on sight. We label our sensations with mechanical & misleading words: emotions, drives, instincts, needs. I admit to confusing communication by using incorrect words for my sensations. Using clear words is important to me. Words should reflect my sensations and connections not define them. This was very good to read. As said Confucius said, "The beginning of wisdom is calling things by their right name"
This activity definitely enhanced my trustfulness of nature's sensory essence. All that I am is Nature, I know her as intimately as I know myself - the more I know myself the more I know her, and the more I know her, the more I know my Self.
