An Organic Psychology Report from a New Jersey Course Participant
Yesterday, I did a somewhat vicarious version the "unity" activity. I had done this type of experience a few years ago, made it up while walking on an isolated trail...and truly felt one. I wrote of this in my Orientation class. The final day of "doing" such an exercise I was confronted with a near molest experience. Fear not! It was as if a force field was about me and this man just stared at me speechless as he leaned against his truck that blocked the entrance. I was calm and felt strangely protected after feeling initial primal fear. After several minutes (who's counting at such times, if time even existed?!), he got into the truck and drove away. I looked up and asked my Inner "Was I at risk?" Answer in calm, strong voice: "Absolutely. You no longer need to come here." But I miss the space, or is it that I miss a larger nature space?!
Saturday driving home from on the freeway, I noticed several tree stumps on the right side of freeway. I was unusually aware of the landscape on the trip up and to my destination, enjoying the abundant, assorted trees of this river city, seeing them as never before frame the horizon. It's as if I saw the green over and above the buildings! This expanded perception remained with me on my return trip. About half way home, here were these tree stumps where once stood tall, wispy trees that would seemingly "wave" as I drove by at 70 mph. While trying to keep eyes on the road, I counted 4...5...10...15...10 more...10 more...space...5 more...must have been over 50 trees felled to about a foot above ground. I then imagined an electric saw cutting through the bark, into the sap "veins," heard the whirring of the motor, and imagined the blank brain of the manpower getting paid to do the killing. I thought of the movie, "the Killing Fields." What's the difference? Cambodian peasants or New Jersey trees? Maybe they had a disease, I thought, rationally. Then a new thought: who had the disease? By the time I drove past the 50th or 100th (lost count), I actually had tears in my eyes. Something was wrong or I wouldn't have felt tears. I wondered how many other motorists noticed? How did that scene of destruction affect them on any level?
I try to constantly remind myself that all is as it needs to be. To date humans learn through hardship and pain. The wide easy street of pure attraction leads to laziness and dissatisfaction we need a state of strife in order to learn what we don't want, reverse learning.
We are evolving in consciousness as this group and this course demonstrate. Nature is speaking to itself and learning about itself through us and through us Nature is embodied and made manifest. It seems that it would be insane for Nature to attack itself by employing human greed, fear and desire for power to teach itself about the insanity of destroying its own environment (self). In tragedy we see the horror of suffering and also the depths of human caring and compassion. Light and shadow, Yin and Yang all balanced in a dance to bring information that raises consciousness to a level yet inexperienced by the masses.
This is where NSTP and Applied Eco Psychology come in by helping people connect with a natural knowledge that will help them survive in a vastly different world. We have the ability to choose because we can see the effects of our actions over time. Will we, with our impressive self-reflective consciousness choose life for future generations or will we be content to die as sturdy individuals taking our future and the human potential with us?
