Of the hundreds of intense and fulfilling nature experiences I've had in mountain, shore, farm, ocean, forest (made love in the Chicago Forest Preserve!), birthing and so on, there's one experience that opened the door to Love-love of nature and love in a relationship. Although I count skin diving amongst my favorite experiences because of the sensory feel and the exhilaration of sea life, I keep coming back to the awakening of physical passion (for lack of better phrase) on a hot beach in Panama at the age of 15 or 16. On three favorite occasions I have had significant love-making experiences in nature. This one opened the door to eroticism, which nature IS to me. Laying on the beach in a posture akin to the famous scene in the war movie with Debra Kerr and Burt Lancaster, encased in a full-body 1950's bathing suit, I felt the first rush of erotic pleasure without intercourse. I was on the rough sand with my silken-skinned first love (later to be lover) on top, who I dated for four years. He was a dark-skinned Panamanian-Cuban--nature personified-skin, texture, smell, essence, sensitivity. The combination of the hot sand below and the cold ocean pouring over our bodies with the rising tide resembled eating cold ice cream with hot chocolate sauce! The experience was intensified by the rising of the surf rushing up from our feet to our waists as if we could be engulfed by the sea.
What is planted in my mind is the comprehensive feeling of the sea, earth and sky, together with a tropical breeze and absolute stillness...simply rustling in the background of palm trees, swishing of water. The embrace and the wise acceptance of the setting were inborn and unmistakable. I did not need to be taught to love another or feel embraced equally by the environment--to feel swelling passion rolling over me, sense palm trees many yards behind me, feel the vastness of the blue sky, sense the ground beneath as extending miles below. One could say I felt one with more than the surface experience. To this day I remember the power of that connection though the twosome relationship has long been separated.
At my favorite café there is a flock of birds that circle overhead in the late afternoon. I often stop in the street, mesmerized by their erratic game of follow the leaders. I ask them "Who are you without your names and labels?" I "hear" in my heart: Freedom. "Who am I without my name?" Bondage-becoming-Freedom! Without language this flock and the shrubs and trees below it in the parking lot seem bonded, the plants rooted, the birds in flight, yet both free from superstition, planted in integrity and giving joy, not judgment. If I could not experience the sky beings and the earth plantings, I would feel stripped of my bark! Yes, I trust these feelings of being in the presence of this natural environment for I feel them in the moment. I feel extremely worthy to be blessed to observe them and contribute to their experience! I am sure now that THEY, the flying and the planted, are sensing ME
