I'm visiting Maine from Florida. The sky is full of gray clouds, heavy with snow or rain, both have been falling here today. I came across one of the little streams on the property. the water speaking in a rhythmic cadence. I smile. it seems that more is speaking to me, perhaps I am really learning to listen and trust. I cross the bubbling stream, fresh with new water as the rains have given it more stories to share.
The same thought crosses my mind again, I can't keep going to the tree. I see it (him? her?) from far away. it is almost as if I am gazing at a lover. the feelings rise and my chest fills with the crisp, clean country air. I am going to go to it. I sense that the most important thing for me at this moment is to trust not only my attractions, but what brings pleasure and what arises within. follow this.
At the base of the tree, I see the face more clearly today on the trunk. two eyes and a mouth seem to gaze outward, and there is a moment I wonder if it might be gazing at me. I ask permission to 'enter its home' space, and I wait. I look up at the sky and I see hues of blue, along with grey, almost tungsten colored clouds which are quickly pushing at the fading tones of blue. I sit down at the base of the trunk, and relax into its roots. They are so firmly planted in the earth. It doesn't move. It is a fairly large tree. I see birds crossing the upper atmosphere. I become overwhelmed with gratitude for where I live.
It is beautiful here. a beauty different than the flash and drama of the coast; There is an ancient quiet, and calm, and I breathe deeply into the tree, thanking it for giving me clarity. Xanessa sits down next to me. she sits with an alertness, and she quietly waits for me. I close my eyes and feel so alive. Then I hear magpies playing with each other in flight, sheep are bleating and I can almost sense a new kind of trust building inside.
My experience in nature shows me that I am a person who gets good feelings from beauty, quiet, strength, breezes, sitting on or close to, the earth, being in the moment and trusting it.
