I wasn't attracted to going outside yesterday with caution because I couldn't imagine that I could do the assignment in freezing rain and wind, etc. More than that, I felt my partner would've balked. However, I just got back from doing the activity with my partner who is almost 80 years of age, a photographer, and quite set in his ways. I had to pretty much talk him into it. He never really got into the spirit of it but we did it and as usual I got much from the experience.
We went to a lot that has been left open as an area to sit in tucked into a regular city block, between building. We sat on a bench and I took off my shoes. The ground is paved and the cement was wet and cold on my bare feet and wet leaves I stepped on immediately stuck to the bottom of my feet feeling chilly and squishy but not bad at all. He led me around by the hand and he didn't ever test my sense of sight--but he took me to a series of trees. I felt up and down the bark for texture and I reached up to see how tall and reached around to feel how big--like a little kid. I stood next to the trees and reached up on my tiptoes. He led me to bushes I had to reach down to and felt cool smooth leaves. I must say that he wasn't very imaginative about introducing me to nature in this place. After about 5 minutes I was following him back to the bench where we began and one step I took brought me into a moment of bright sunshine on my face which I really appreciate and another step brought me to a wafting smell of plants I had been looking for but nothing seemed to have fragrance. I appreciate the frangrance gifted to me by a bit of wind and the thing that plants do to release their smell.
We asked the place for permission and we were both immediately certain we were welcome, he even more so than I. I didn't realize that his intro to me was not too imaginative until he let me be his guide and I immediately saw a plan of taking him to all kinds of different leaves present. When we compared notes at the end he said the leaves made him nervous because he could feel where insects had taken bites from them and he wonder if they were still there. He felt spider webs on the tree trunk and he heard two men talking on the sidewalk and felt some anxiety about what they were doing there. I had not noticed the men at all. I felt unsure about having him lead me thinking that he might not be looking for obstacles for me but only himself. He said he felt what it was like to be blind. Before we talked he said he didn't learn anything from the activity and I said I'd learned a lot. After we talked, he said he was cold and wanted to go home and get some work done. I said I felt refreshed and more alive as I always do after the activities.
