A Course Participant's Report:
Last night I just needed (that's putting it mildly) to get out of the city. I actually felt sick from the overstimulation and assault to my senses and am getting the courage to actually speak that I feel assaulted at times. We drove into the deep desert. The activity helped me just soak it in and ask nature to touch me. Grateful is a word that doesn't come near to covering the feelings. Watching the desert come alive above a beautiful lake, the cactuses, seeing a coyote from the top of the hill--I was overwhelmed at the communication coming back from a large mountain near the lake. I noticed that once they recognized us, the birds took flight, yet the coyote's presence did not seem to bother them. The further I get into this program the more naturally the nature connections come. I absolutely have to be in nature. The communication coming back at me from the mountain, it felt like I was the mountain, the coyote, the cactus wren. The "I" in me disappeared. My real and full life is when I am in nature.
I returned home and the city did not sicken me. Somehow nature had increased my resilience. Two days later, I again felt overwhelmed but I could not go to the desert. I did the nature-connecting activity by seeking natural attractions around the house. As our potted geranium drew my attention, for some reason my dog, Ruby, came into the room. She snuggled up and licked me. I felt the same happiness I felt seeing the coyote in the desert. Here, at home, that wonderful passion was immediately available and fulfilling. And my love for Ruby was reciprocated, she naturally knew that I needed it. I can trust and unashamedly support this natural love. It helps me feel alive, free and happy.
Dogs love us because as descendants of the wolf they are pack animals that give their devotion, loyalty and love to members of their pack. But considering the profound love of all that I felt in the desert, I realize that nature's unconditional love is everywhere. Every plant, animal and mineral member of the global life community both shares and gives that love as part of nature's "pack."
Dogs and cats are so special. They allow us to be members of their society or family. Most other animals fear and flee us. Well they should considering how instead of returning their natural love we often kill them for no apparent reason. The nature-exploitive story that we learn to march to in industrial society is not reasonable. That story disconnects us from loving nature within and around us, and vice versa. It explains to me my discomfort in the city.
Today I took Ruby for a walk in the park to discover natural attractions I might find there for my next Internet course activity. People from all over had come to enjoy the park, to take in its warmth and peace. The songs that were sung, the hums that were hummed all contributed to the harmony and unity I felt there. Ruby and I took pleasure in resonating in this natural essence of true love. I think that love is the only world Ruby knows. I feel so fortunate that we share it.
