How to Help Nature Heal Our Depression
A Course Participant's Report:
This course with its means to develop consent and trust provides a valuable lesson. It embodies what I believe is needed in the world right now. By teaching us how to reconnect with nature it provides a powerful expertise, a mechanism for achieving balance and harmony within ourselves and our relationships. This enables us to heal the hurt and pain of our depression. Our mood disorders and broken hearts basically result from the separation of our mind and heart from the joy of nature's grace, balance and rejuvenating powers. As a former student describes, this cripples our life spirit.
There is a garbage bin outside my office by the parking lot. It is crooked, and it has been crooked for a long time. Perhaps somebody banged into it once while trying to park and shifted it so that it is in that position. Dear me, I've seen it everyday , why did I not straighten it? Is this how we get used to crooked politicians and crooked business deals that finally depress us? Because they are so familiar we don t have the feelings we should have over their perversions and distortions? In our artificial world , are we getting more and more used to things that are not right until we do not even realize that it has to be corrected? What has caused my inertia over the crooked garbage bin? It is heavy, yes I must admit that is true because it is concrete but it can be shifted if I made an effort to get help to shift it. Help from friends, help from natural attractions to restore my wholeness and strength. Yes, it needs that motivation and expertise and more than one person to shift! Is that why we become so listless and helpless? Because, without expertise and community we cannot change things on our own, we just don't do anything about what we should take action on? And then it becomes familiar and when that happens, we even like things the way they are. We get attention for depression and its pain; we have a reason for not relating as fully as we could. Perhaps I would feel odd if the bin was straight, or maybe , someone would go and make it crooked again if I straightened it because they re so used to having it crooked.
Connection with natural systems helps us discover and correct the crooked or broken parts of us. As Alice said, "For a long time, I felt worthless and unimportant having faced a lot of disappointments with regards to my education. I explored many avenues trying my best to complete my education and this was constant battle. I failed continuously falling prey to empty promises and this left me broken, very much like the high school students. When I was told about the Eco Psych program, the answer was "NO''. Project NatureConnect sent me the books for the orientation course and it did change my life in unimaginable ways. The activities just blew me away. Today I don't feel "broken'' anymore. The nature activities breathed fresh air into me. I don't feel a failure anymore. I feel I can trust myself. I feel great!
Like Alice, I now feel a new sense of joy in my life and the need to share it with you all. I draw the strength I need from nature; being in nature makes me come alive. I don't feel judged there, rather I feel happy and peaceful. I'm not abandoned. The most important sense any human being strives to achieve is trust. I feel it in nature. When I can't find solutions to problems, I have tended to blame others or myself; now nature helps me find and give love.
