THE MAGICAL VALUE OF NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATION IN NATURAL RELATIONSHIPS.
There have been a few different
times in the past week that I have experienced nonverbal connecting
and communication. What a magical thing! I love the sensations
that come along with it... the world feels like a dream or fantasy,
only it's tangible in our physical bodies. First, I was standing
in a courtyard at an old building that had a variety of trees
growing in it. There was one tree with smooth bark that canopied
out like a tent. You could easily walk into the open embrace
of the low-hanging branches and literally be inside of the tree.
The leaves were big and broad. The sun shined over a wall and
illuminated them at various degrees on different levels. As I
stood there I couldn't help but look up into the tunnel of glowing
leaves and wish that I could slide ride through them into the
branches. They looked so soft and smooth.
The second time, it was a gorgeous sunset. Oranges, blues, purples,
pinks with sun streaks breaking through the bubbling clouds.
As I watched I could almost feel the energy from the sun streaks
breaking through the atmosphere. I imagined flying up and around
all of the puffy clouds and relished the pleasing colors.
The third time was actually today while I was working in the
Everglades. We are now trying to take body measurements and a
few feathers from the great egret chicks that are almost old
enough to fly (they just run really fast and are excellent climbers!).
While I know that we aren't exactly welcomed tromping through
their quiet nesting area like we are, I try to tell myself (and
the birds) that what we are doing is meant to help the birds
in the future and that we aren't going to hurt them. Anyway,
it was a busy morning trying to find the giant fledglings, capture
them, and quickly take our measurements. Most of the birds are
fairly calm after we get a hold of them, with the exception of
a few feet kicks and beak pecks in the
process. The rehabilitation director says they are overcome by
stress. One bird in particular was fiestier. He was continually
kicking and working hard. He would just watch us and as I stood
by I was fascinated by communication from his eyes. He continued
to flail, so I lightly held a cloth over his eyes and he calmed
down drastically. We finished within a few minutes and it was
time to let him go. We held him up to a branch near where we
found him and waited until he had steady feet to stand on. What
was surprising to me was that he didn't immediately balk and
run, he actually stood where we placed him and watched us as
we packed up and left. It may have been stress that did this
but I think we, too, were stressed and curious. I certainly was.
I felt connected enough to know that he would be calmed by not
having such strange visual communication stimulation and he felt
connected enough with us to be curious and not run instantly
when we let him go. I'm sure if we tried to capture him again
he would run, but we didn't need to and I didn't want to breach
the delicate trust that we may have just established. Plus, I
received my "payback" for disturbing them: his cousin
pooped on my head. That's ok :) We won't be back for a while
and they're welcome to poop on me again for it!
I discovered that life and nature are magical - we just have
to believe it, believe that anything is possible, and take the
time to slow ourselves and notice. We (humans) belong in natural
cycles and settings and may be welcomed when our intentions are
truly good for nonverbal communication has no boundaries.
This activity was a lot of fun and is something that we can do
everywhere and everyday. What better way to walk through your
day than connected, feeling welcome, and feeling mystified by
the world around you. It makes everything else that we get so
bent-out-of-shape about pale in comparison to the amazing power
and bonds that really exist through and around us. What a gift
it is to live as a part of Nature!
Act now.

"Human
behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire.
The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious
traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization.
When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people
and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species
are threatened."
-Stephen
Aizenstat
In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives
mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block
from our thinking over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings
and fulfillments we normally share with natural systems and their
eons of experience. Our subconscious hurt and frustration from
the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest
troubles.
-Michael
J. Cohen

learning to enhance the natural psychic pulse within and around
us. Add the sensory ecoscience of Organic Psychology to your life and livelihood.
