THE NATURAL SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS AND THE CHRISTMAS TREE
An Organic Psychology Report from an Online Course Participant
The relationship between Spirit and Nature is something I never even questioned. I seem to have been born knowing this connection and this Christmas I struggle with those who live in complete ignorance of the connection.
I almost compulsively and destructively participate in increasing the betterment of others and myself, and have for seemingly all 58 of my years. I just have, now, what I consider to be more authentic and deeper tools for achieving this through this Organic Psychology program. It gives me an assuredness that can't be taken away with my long term chronic "people pleasing disease" Now, I can experience nature's power to create organic integrity through gaining a working understanding of it, through learning what I am attracted to and what I am not attracted to and believing I don't have to be attracted to what everyone else is.
My need to please caused me to reflect on my own personal celebration of Christmas (I don't espouse this for anyone else and I rarely share it however this is relevant to my own organic integrity.)
For most of my adult life I have been caught up in the holiday rush of gift buying, parties to give and attend, eating too much, hurrying, exhaustion, decorating a huge home for three weeks...my kids said it looked like Santa threw up. I wondered why I often felt nothing. Please know that I did this loving every minute of it, providing wonderful and fun memories for my children and sharing my authentic love of the holiday, yet I often felt empty.I got a divorce, sold the big house and moved into a six acre secluded cottage to heal my life. It was then that I realized that each day was "just one day" and I could get through it (kids gone and grown). I began to simplify. I can't even tell you how much I gave away, I would be embarrassed by my own confession. Instead of hosting neighborhood parties-I got quiet, watched the winter birds out of my window and let nature decorate the 35 year old pines surrounding my "nest" with fresh snow as I sat mesmerized in front of the fire.
I did this for hours and days, curling up with a book, discovering my own organic integrity. Then, I found an artist to support each year and to buy something for each adult I knew and a book for each child....in other words, to live Christmas all year long. I give presents when I wanted to. I no longer even put up a tree (I can't get permission from any live tree to cut it down and end its life in the name of Christmas, and the artificial trees no longer work for me).
Christmas now lives inside of me all the time, every day. This is how I see my organic integrity birthing itself. It is starting to live inside of me everyday. Not just when I am in nature, but when I am attracted to someone, something or someplace in a sensible way.
I am finding my authentic natural self through doing what I described above, through slowing down my life, through saying no, through going inside and within the spirit of nature to make my choices. It has given me the wisdom to responsibly overcome the powerlessness that I see all around me. Ironically I have been looking at situations in which I gave my power away out of fear, out of not being heard and being judged. My powerlessness manifested in my simply going away from problems or was that my power? I refused consciously to pick up the sword, sometimes it was power and sometimes it was fear. I guess we are the only ones who can know our motives.
I discovered that, not just at Christmas, but year round, it is possible to safely join with a greater wholeness than yourself. I don't choose to join things unconsciously any more. I've gotten more picky in my "old age".
Living among the Native Americans I have been told that they observe character through watching, deciding what level of connection they want and if you are trusted you are allowed to learn with them. I like that thought. I have always been a golden retriever welcoming everyone into my circle and I think I was born to be a good host. However, I safely join with other people now. I listen to nature's silent intelligence and I am now aware when that attraction is not present.
A course member's response by email: Thanks for sharing this part of your life. To me, giving when I am attracted to give, and that is most of the time...is just a part of being human and natural. We give our breath daily....we give our love to something daily as well...and your little escape sounds ideally what I had been hoping to find. Instead I have a two bedroom flat in a large apartment community...but at least the view of the woods out my window will allow just a taste of watching natures way of saying happy holidays. And in each day...it is a holiday...something to celebrate...the sunrise...the clouds...the rain...the breeze....the squirrel chattering in the tree to welcome me to the neighborhood.
