Appropriately, very cold local weather here along this mountain creek in Canada, very windy, snowed in, noise subdued. Wonderful. I strapped on the snowshoes and walked to a many acre vacant lot. It was the home of an old brick school. One I attended. In those days I was in class with the same people, kindergarten to 12th in high school. The school was torched several years ago, small town politics. I went to the bridge that goes from the school to the ball field; one I crossed many, many times, many, many years ago. I stood on the bridge l looking at the creek below, in both directions, watching, listening, and remembering. Even before asking permission to visit, I was enveloped with warmth through my entire body. Feeling humbled, alone, in the past. I do have memories pre-injury. I watched as we danced around the may pole, played, innocent. I am extremely invigorated by severe weather; I still do not take enough time to heal outside. When giving my self in, and to nature, I get back a very strong and gentle reminder that I need to be here to receive the healing that I get, which will support among eco-zombies so that I can maintain civility. The outdoors calls to me, rain, and snow speak to me, join us, let us sooth and comfort your weariness, and we will give you the strength you need to greet another day. We have the wisdom now that you are currently unable to access, be fortified by what we share, there are no strings attached. This love is unconditional. The ultimate gift. The stinging wind on my face is the wake up call that needs no cup of coffee to follow. My entire being is alive. I love life in nature, all other life requires a lot of deliberate muscling to get through. Nature accepts in fact does not even notice my limitations. Lastly, I'd like to make a comment on the optional reading section at the end of chapter two, the one about Karen and nature-disconnected education. This touched me personally and is the section of the chapter that attracted me the most. My son has never fit into the established school system. He is extremely sensitive and has his own mind about what he wants to do and his interests. To help try to explain him, without writing a novel, he's very much like an intuitive, conscious adult trapped in a child's body. School bores him and makes him frustrated. Although he tests as advanced and scores A's and B's on tests and has a vocabulary and imagination that blows his teachers away he is failing school. The structure does not work for him. A few years back I remember reading in the book Autobiography of a Yogi by Parmanhansa Yognanda, that he established outside school in India feeling that the connection with nature and being outside would be better for the students and their learning. I remember thinking that this would be good for Paul. Reading the story about Karen and her joining Project Nature Connect's outdoor school in the end, was like a missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle.
